Roger, your remarks about testing various soundfiles in-game and listening to them out of game reminds me of my own experiences some years back, attempting to mix a killer engine sound for a BRM: British Racing Motors.

First I tried a sound that was a sound sample from a real recording. The sample was not good enough because the volume level had to be fairly constant and it wasn't, secondly the sound was very different in-game. When attempting to mix other sound sources into the file, the result was a monotonous and very computerized buzzing. I gave up in despair and exasperation, with renewed appreciation for the sound makers.
