The 2018 remake of the series Das Boot was aired last night on Canvas TV, watched the first 2 episodes, it's spoken in German with Dutch subtitles so it is a bit of a struggle to follow exactly what is being said but I'm managing.

It has nothing to do with the original Das Boot which featured the real mission 7 of U-96, this new series is following U-612 also a type VIIc Uboat, which in the series is out in the Atlantic chasing a convoy when called to report for a secret mission. Ok in real life U-612 was sunk on a training mission in May 1942 when U-444 struck her, U-612 went down and 2 sailors lost their lives but the rest of the crew escaped. After a few months the crew managed to salvage the boat and take it in for repair in August 1942, U-612 was declared too badly damaged to return to frontline duty and was used as a training ship until she was scuttled in 1945 by her crew. The second officer, Herbert Werner, wrote the book Iron Coffins about his time in the Kreigsmarine

That is the main gripe about it, the story is heading in a good direction and the acting is quite good and well staged, It's time is divided between ship and shore with one of the crew's sister in the interpretation dept. of the local Naval HQ.

It is not as gripping as Das Boot which I think was very good at getting across what it was like at sea, but it's early days yet.
