Its major problem is that it's part one of the series, so it doesn't "end." That said, it stands alone better than many others of its ilk have, and it wraps up its own story even though it leaves the fates of the major characters up in the air.

Actually, whether it was a conscious decision or not, it parallels others' first installments like Hunger Games or Star Wars where the immediate big threat is overcome, but the main characters are still in overall danger and the villains are set back but not defeated.
