Before he committed suicide (not long after this IIRC), he was best known to genre fans for his role on SeaQuest DSV, the near-future submarine SF series starring first Roy Scheider and then later Michael Ironside.
The problem is Lucas WANTED it that way. He could've acted differently, look at him in Jumper. A worse film than Ep II, but not because of him. His acting is far more normal. Unfortunately, that film killed his career.
