The war was already long won by the time he died. He only died about 3 weeks before V-E Day.


One wonders how the conflict would have panned out if he had survived beyondAugust 1945. Would he of authorised (Truman's decision, entirely justified to my mind) the atomic bombing of Japan or rather endorsed an invasion of the home islands with the accompanied huge loss of life and infrastructure?
