I think the norm nowadays for a movie to make a profit is to earn at least one time it's budget.

So if the budget was $110 million, it need to earn $220 million.

That used to be the rule when the US box office was significantly larger than the international box office. That's no longer the case. A perfect example is "Pacific Rim". It failed to make even as much as its budget in the US but it did extremely well internationally and the last report I read said that the film was profitable.
