I've seen reports that not only his own crew but people who've worked tangentially with him over the years (including none recently) are dismissive or disbelieving of his portrayal in the film.

So my guess is the script makes him look more heroic than he really was, but I don't know if he's the huge jerk that some others are trying to counter-portray him as.

As usual, the truth probably lies in the middle.
