That did indeed happen during the war but it was not typical. There were several US infantry divisions that saw action in all of those different theatres that you mentioned so it was possible for some squads to remain intact assuming that they didn't have any casualties.


I do concede though that it is a popular story-telliing device for Hollywood films since it keeps all of the characters together throughout the story.
