Ian McKellen plays a 93 year old Sherlock Holmes, retired to an small country house in Dover, and suffering the effects of senility, and possibly Alzheimer's. He is resolved to remember how his last case actually ended, and not how Watson wrote it, before he dies.

A little sad to see the Holmes character like that, and fighting to disassociate himself from the fictional character that Watson created in his stories.
