What are some of the best and most compelling acting performances you have seen of a US President either in a movie or tv series? Here are my top 5:

1. Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in "Lincoln". For me, this is the gold standard portrayal of Lincoln. I've seen many other actors play Lincoln and none of them come close.

2. Gary Sinise as Harry Truman in the HBO film "Truman".

3. Paul Giamatti as John Adams in the HBO series "John Adams".

4. Bruce Greenwood as JFK in "13 Days".

5. David Morse as George Washington in the HBO series "John Adams".

This just reminds me how great the John Adams miniseries was.

John Adams is a really underrated HBO series!

Always liked Bruce Greenwood as Kennedy in Thirteen Days, but then I have always liked that movie very much. The F-8 Crusader scene is one of my all-time favourite flying scenes in any movie.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

You picked two of my favorites Panzer, Bruce Greenwood as Kennedy and Gary Sinise as Truman. It has been some years but I remember quite enjoying Martin Sheen's Kennedy as well. I think Gary Sinise is just near the perfect actor and personality to play someone like Truman and Lt. Dan. If I ever served under him in some capacity I think I'd echo Forrest Gump's sentiment, "I sure hope I don't let him down." I thought Hal Holbrook was good as Lincoln in the "North and South" miniseries.

I thought Ronald Reagan was pretty compelling.

If you've never seen it, I can recommend "Young Mr. Lincoln" from 1939 starring Henry Fonda as Lincoln directed by the great John Ford.

and even though it was a fictional story, Brian Keith did a great job as Theodore Roosevelt in "The Wind and the Lion" ---one of my favorite movies.

Also, Tom Beringer made a decent Teddy Roosevelt in the miniseries called "The Rough Riders"

They got most of the firearms right also. Here's a shot from the series of Teddy with his favorite Winchester Model 1895 chambered in 30 US or the 30-40 cartridge developed for the 1896 Krag used in the Spanish-American war. The soldier behind Roosevelt is shooting a Springfield Krag carbine which was the standard issue for the Rough Riders.

Thank you for those recommendations FO. I've seen a clip from "The Wind and the Lion" and Brian Keith's portrayal immediately drew my attention. It looks like an interesting, well made fillm. "Young Mr. Lincoln" also looks very good. I liked Lewis' portrayal as I recall and enjoyed his dream sequences but I had a hard time with much of the movie. I recently tried to watch "Lincoln" again and I just couldn't stomach it and had to turn it off. Right out of the gate we get what I feel are very contrived biases in the writing that I find to be very off-putting.
