I could probably count on one hand the number of games where I choose to leave it on. Total War is one, I love the strat-map music in those games. But all shooters it is off, Borderlands included. I'm talking background music, as some music is iconic, like that in the Fallout games. But there you're tuning in to radio stations, and can switch it on and off as needed. I like music, just not in most of my games.
