AMD's gaming revenue nosedives 48%, not expected to recover until 2025 — lack of interest in RDNA 3 coupled with fewer console sales

So, does that mean there won't be any new Radeon RX 8000-series RDNA 4 GPUs this year? AMD isn't saying anything officially yet, but it wouldn't be shocking to see the company delay the launch of RDNA 4 given the apparently weak sales of RX 7000-series GPUs.

While the Radeon RX 7900 GRE is one of the best graphics cards around, this addition is arguably not enough to make the whole lineup significantly more competitive. This is why AMD expects sales of its gaming solutions to decline by around 30% year-over-year in the first half of 2024, and expects even worse results in the second half of the year.

AMD's elusive Ryzen 7 8700F hits Amazon for $299.99 — pricier than the better-performing 7700X

Unfortunately, cache capacity is the least problematic side of the 8700F. At $299.99, the Ryzen 7 8700F is priced very poorly in AMD's current Zen 4 CPU lineup. The Ryzen 7 8700G is only 10% more expensive, and the Ryzen 7 7700X betterand Ryzen 7 7700 are cheaper — with the 7700X going for $286 on Amazon right now.

AMD Turns 55: From Humble Beginnings To One Of The Largest Tech Powerhouses

AMD is celebrating its 55th anniversary, marking the iconic period during which the firm grew from a microprocessor supplier to a dominant player in the PC and client industry.

Team Red is seen as one of the biggest marvels of the tech markets, and we can't even debate how the company managed to grow itself to a whopping $240 billion powerhouse. Not only did AMD revolutionize the personal computing segment through its Zen processor architecture, but with the debut of the Radeon graphics lineup, the company became a leading figure in the markets.

Moving its way into the highs and lows of the industry, AMD gained significant traction with the advent of the AI hype, penetrating deep into the markets with its Instinct lineup of AI accelerators and the famous EPYC processors.

Without AMD challenging Intel and Nvidia, we'd have a lot less power in our gaming PCs -- but, we'd be paying a lot more for that less powerful PC.

Intel and Nvidia produce good products.

But, over the decades, they have pulled "shenanigans" (some outright illegal) to try and keep AMD down. All that is why I'm an AMD fan and won't buy Intel or Nvidia (though I did in the past).

For example, as previously noted in this thread: Intel illegally (proved in court) almost destroyed AMD a couple decades ago -- AMD stock value fell under $2 a share (now roughly $144).

P.S. I'm not trying to convince any reader to not buy Intel or Nvidia. Just reporting. smile

The best CPU for gaming is on an incredible sale — Ryzen 7 7800X3D is only $358

Still the fastest CPU for gaming on the market for pure gaming tasks, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D from AMD rules the roost. If you're looking to build the meanest gaming rig possible right now, then the 7800X3D has to be part of that, but it does come at a premium.

You can get your hands on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D right now for just $358 at Newegg and Amazon. It's not the lowest-ever price we've recorded for this CPU, but it is the lowest it's been in a little while, and money saved on one component means more to spend on another.

Leak/Rumor: The next versions of AMD gaming Graphics Cards will not include a highest-end model.

Next version (RDNA 4) will only include improved mid-price and low-price models (the one's most folks buy). The "massive" improvements come in the generation after the next one (RDNA 5) -- and are already underway.

Quote
AMD RDNA 5 To Be A Completely New GPU Architecture From The Ground Up, RDNA 4 Mostly Fixes RDNA 3 Issues & Improves Ray Tracing

The leaker states that AMD's plans with the RDNA 3 GPU lineup didn't go as expected. The issues with RDNA 3 were caused by the final silicon not meeting internal performance projections

Looking ahead, AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs are mostly going to be an architectural tweak of RDNA 3. The lineup is said to be comparable to the Radeon RX 7900 XT GPUs and as we know, there are going to be two SKUs, the Navi 48 and Navi 44, both of which will be targeted at mainstream and entry-level consumers

So next up, we have the AMD RDNA 5 GPUs. The GPU generation following RDNA 4 is expected to be built on a brand new architecture designed from the ground up

RDNA 5 is also said to be the primary reason why RDNA 4 is being cut off so much so that more time can be put into perfecting the generation that comes after it all the while offering a mainstream series that doesn't require lots of development costs.

Intel-powered Aurora supercomputer fails to dethrone AMD-powered Frontier on Top500 list, again — claims spot as fastest AI supercomputer with HPL-MxP benchmark instead

Aurora remains beset by numerous hardware issues like hardware and cooling system failures, operational errors, and network instability, among others ... The continued issues are a bit surprising—the system was first announced nine years ago, the second revision was announced five years ago (the first version was canceled), and the final components were installed eleven months ago.

The system houses 21,248 CPUs and 63,744 GPUs spread across 10,624 compute blades

Worth noting the CPU count and GPU count. Just another indication that there's a lot of hardware and money involved in AI.

AMD launches Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F — budget Zen 4 CPUs without the RDNA 3 integrated graphics

The Ryzen 8000 F-series processors leverage AMD's existing Phoenix APU silicon, which comes directly from TSMC's 4nm oven. The chips still feature Zen 4 execution cores but lack the integrated RDNA 3 graphics engine that's present in the Ryzen 8000G counterparts. The approach is analogous to what Intel does with its F-series models, fusing off the iGPU to offer cheaper models to attack lower price points. Therefore, you must pair the Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F with a discrete graphics card.

Basically, these are just "cheap" CPUs. The 8000 series APU graphics have been disabled -- possibly, these are renamed "G" series CPUs that had graphics malfunctions in tests.

AMD EPYC 4004 CPUs Launched: Up To 16 Cores At 5.7 GHz For $699, Crushing Intel Xeon In Perf & Efficiency, 2.8x Faster In Crypto Mining

The AMD EPYC 4004 Desktop CPUs are centered around the AM5 socket which we have seen on the consumer-oriented Ryzen platforms. ... The Zen 4-powered EPYC 4004 Desktop CPUs come in a range of options, scaling from 4 cores to 16 cores and offering up to 128 MB of L3 cache with the 3D V-Cache-boosted "X" variants.

In performance comparisons, AMD is pitting the chips against the Xeon E-2400 "Raptor Lake" CPU family which scales from just 4-8 cores. These chips are the only mainstream server platform that is offered by Intel so it makes sense to compare the two lineups. AMD touts a 1.7x increase in perf, 1.5x increase in perf/$, 1.7x increase in perf/system$, and 1.5x increase in perf/Watt. Comparing the top Intel 8 core with its own 8-core EPYC 4004 CPU, the company reveals that at a $277 lower cost, you get 80% faster performance and 50% better efficiency.

The AMD EPYC 4004 Series processors are built to deliver strong, general-purpose computing in a single-socket package, enabling highly performant rack scale, multi-node, and tower configurations where system cost and other infrastructure constraints are critical considerations.

Lisa Su says AMD is on track to a 100x [AI] power efficiency improvement by 2027 — CEO outlines AMD’s advances during keynote at imec’s ITF World 2024

AMD CEO Lisa Su attended imec’s ITF World 2024 conference to accept the prestigious imec Innovation Award for innovation and industry leadership, joining the ranks of other previous honorees like Gordon Moore, Morris Chang, and Bill Gates. After accepting the award, Su launched into her presentation covering the steps that AMD has taken to meet the company’s 30x25 goal, which aims for a 30x increase in compute node power efficiency by 2025. Su announced that AMD is not only on track to meet that goal, but it also now sees a pathway to more than a 100x improvement by 2026 to 2027.

as far back as 2021.. AMD began work on its 30x25 goal to improve data center compute node power efficiency, specifically citing AI and HPC power consumption as a looming problem. (AMD set its first ambitious energy goal back in 2014 with its inaugural 25x20 goal to improve consumer processor power efficiency by 25x by 2020, which it exceeded with a 31.7x improvement.)

public power grids aren’t prepared for a sudden surge of power-hungry [AI] data centers, making power the new limiting factor [in AI development].

AMD’s Next-Gen Ryzen “Zen 5” CPUs Might Be Launching As Early As August

Mini PC manufacturer, AOOSTAR, has recently been in the highlights as the company has spilled the beans on several upcoming products such as the Radeon RX 7650 XT mobile refresh GPU, & also revealed that the next-gen Ryzen CPUs based on the Zen 5-core architecture are expected to arrive in August.

the Mini PC manufacturer is likely referring to the AMD Strix "Zen 5" APUs as they make Mini PCs based on mobile chips and not desktop SKUs. With that said, we can expect the next-gen Ryzen Desktop CPUs featuring Zen 5 core architecture to arrive on AM5 socket platforms around the same time.

AMD Hits Record High Share in x86 Desktops and Servers in Q1 2024

Coming out of the dark times that preceded the launch of AMD's Zen CPU architecture in 2017, to say that AMD has turned things around on the back of Zen would be an understatement. Ever since AMD launched its first Zen-based Ryzen and EPYC processors for client and server computers, it has been consistently gaining x86 market share, growing from a bit player to a respectable rival to Intel (and all at Intel's expense).

The first quarter of this year was no exception, according to Mercury Research, as the company achieved record high unit shares on x86 desktop and x86 server CPU markets due to success of its Ryzen 8000-series client products and 4th Generation EPYC processors.

In terms of chipsets, it looks like AMD will have a very diverse range of 800-series PCHs including X870E, X870, B850, and B840. Minus the B840, all other chipsets will support overclocking on Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000, and Ryzen 9000 CPUs.

AMD Announces Zen 5 Desktop and Ryzen AI Mobile Hybrid CPUs at Computex

AMD is announcing four new desktop CPUs comprising the Ryzen 9000 series launch. The basic specs of these CPUs are as follows:

The flagship CPU is the Ryzen 9 9950X, which sports 16 cores, 32 threads, 80MB of L2 and L3 cache, a 170W TDP, and a 5.7GHz maximum boost clock.

The Ryzen 9 9900X has 12 cores, 24 threads, 76MB of cache, a 5.6GHz boost clock, and a 120W TDP.

The Ryzen 7 9700X has eight cores, 16 threads, 40MB of cache, a 5.5GHz boost clock, and a 65W TDP.

The Ryzen 5 9600X has six cores, 12 threads, 38MB of cache, a 5.4GHz boost clock, and a 65W TDP.

AMD only provides benchmarks for the 9950X compared with the Intel Core i9-14900K CPU, stating it's faster in both gaming and content creation. For example, its gaming advantage over Intel's CPU ranges from 4% in Borderlands 3 to 23% in Horizon Zero Dawn. In content creation, it's more powerful than Intel's chip, with a spread of 7% in Procyon Office up to 56% in Blender. AMD also says the 9950X is 20% faster in tokens per second LLM training using Mistral.

Coming in July.

Nvidia's grasp of desktop GPU market balloons to 88% — AMD has just 12%, Intel negligible, says JPR

Sales of desktop discrete graphics cards declined quarter-over-quarter, but improved year-over-year in Q1 2024, a recent report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) shows. However, the performance of the two leading suppliers of standalone graphics processors was completely different: despite the market decline, Nvidia increased its sales and gained share (to 88%), whereas AMD's shipments decreased and the share fell sharply (to 12%). Both vendors are well-represented in the ranks of the best graphics cards available today.

"In 2023, we saw four quarters of welcomed growth, and when Q1 2024 was down a bit, no one panicked, as it looked like a return to seasonality — Q1 always used to be flat to down," commented Peddie. "Therefore, one would expect Q2 2024, a traditional quarter, to also be down. But, all the vendors are predicting a growth quarter, mostly driven by AI training systems in hyperscalers.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D drops to $499 for the first time, 7800X3D at $339

A "planned" price cut prior to release of the "next generation" AMD CPUs. Some next generation models due next month (they say).

Reasons for aficionados to wait for the new CPUs (that will cost more than current "sale priced" CPUs).
