Which movies have you seen that you felt had endings which were very open to interpretation? By that I mean enigmatic endings where you weren't quite sure what to think at first and where you had to contemplate the ending for at least a day or two? Here are my top 4:

1 2001: A Space Odyssey (I first saw the movie before I read the book). So...the Star Child is the next phase of our evolution?

2. The Shining (I also saw this first before reading the book) Was Jack a reincarnated spirit who was forever tied to the Overlook Hotel?

3. Inception - Did the spinning top at the end fall over or not?

4. Blade Runner - What was the deal with the origami unicorn Deckard trips over? (now we know but back in 1982 no one had a clue).

Total Recall

Adaptation

Blade Runner (fyi he is NOT a replicant, despite people insisting he is because of the unicorn and the director's cut unicorn scene)

Contact

Edit:

Mulholland Drive

Lost Highway (the only movie I have ever watched I did not figure out the first time watching. This one is a masterpiece by Lynch)

So if the unicorn dream sequence is not a memory implant devised by Tyrell then what is it?

Scott's attempt to make him a replicant after the fact.

This is the same reason you should avoid Gilliam's after the fact late revision of "Brazil:"

and another different version, nicknamed the Sheinberg Edit or 'Love Conquers All' version, from Universal's then boss Sid Sheinberg, against whom Terry Gilliam had to fight to have his version released.

To Gilliam's credit, he didn't screw the film up in the "angels on the cover" version, someone else did.

Edit: Added two more films to the list

Inception - top spinning at the end of the film. Does it fall or continue to spin?

My personal theory is that neither of them are infected and both die of extreme cold while watching each other at gunpoint. A fantastic film indeed.

What you think about the petrol in the bottle theory and no visible breath from childs.

Either way, I love the way it isn't answered.

Yes please. I still want to know about Inception. Is it still a dream or is it real?

At the end of The Passion of the Christ - will that dude who becomes immortal ever be able to enjoy M&Ms in the future?

The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

These United States of America
I just remembered one from a low budget, I think straight to DVD movie called "The Objective" that was actually done really well. A CIA agent leads a team of U.S. special forces into Afghanistan when satellites pick up heat blooms feared to be nuke activity. The team goes in and though all seems fairly typical as far as wartime operations go in the beginning, increasingly bizarre encounters begin to happen. The closing scene in this movie definitely fits the bill for enigmatic endings. I recommend the movie.

I also recommend The Passion of the Christ. It however is not a replacement or a substitute. Though there is much mystery God has not left us in the dark whatsoever. He has given us His word and His word is true and He is trustworthy and faithful. We know how it began and how it will end and what is to come. Christ Jesus is eternal.
