This came up on my recommended viewing list yesterday so I checked it out and the main thing that struck me is how I was able to largely understand the examples given of how someone would have sounded like in the London area in 1586. I think in a prior life I must have been a linguistics professor because this stuff fascinates me. biggrin

That was very interesting. I did not know that goodbye is a contraction that came from the phrase "God be with you" which I think is really neat and far more important in meaning and intent than what generally comes to mind when I think of the word goodbye. I really enjoy discovering the etymology of words. I wonder how well or poorly we would do if we got dropped off somewhere back in time when Old English was the going tongue. I think I may have even seen a video of this man speaking in Old English. I watched an interesting video of a fellow speaking Latin to Italians to see what they could understand of it.

Speaking of Latin, this video may interest you. Based on the comments this seems to be a very accurate rendition of Classical Latin.

PanzerMeyer, this is quite interesting stuff!

I've often wondered myself how we would partake with others from the past. More recently, the Dragon's Dogma game series tries to remain in "Ye Olde" character, quite well, if you long for more. These, along with Kingdom Come Deliverance, that is.

Interesting. The accent used in the examples sounds very similar to what one would hear today in rural North Midland counties such as Derbyshire. A colloquial greeting there would be 'Hey-up me duck'.
'Thee' is still part of everyday speech in the North East, where the accent and much of the vocabulary is derived from the time of Norse dominance.

The commonest greeting in London now would probably be 'As-salamu alaikum'.

.

As a Scot (but with lots of exposure to Midlands > North England) I really didn't have any trouble. Indeed, I strongly suspect that I would have more issue with that language spoken amongst youth culture in London today.
I have always been fascinated/loved accents & dialects & am sad to see things trending towards homogeneity due to all-encompassing modern media. frown

+2 I understand your point and I'm afraid its just one of those inevitable and unavoidable historical changes that humanity is going through. My college German professor said it best when he told me that the single best thing for keeping dialects and accents alive is ISOLATION.
