And by 2135 Humanity would have an answer for that thing. Most likely delivered by one of Elon Musk's rockets... I don't think hurling Tesla cars at it is gonna work

1.2 gigatons isn't the end of the world by a long shot. The other hemisphere should by OK. So...it's the eastern hemisphere then.... Sounds like a plot for series.

We probably deserve it. But "NASA" is reportedly not able to stop it now. In one hundred and seventeen years...what will "NASA" be? And who can say what it can and cannot do then?

All it takes is a dozen missions toward that asteroid to stop this. They approach the asteroid, "crash" land into it sticking engines in one direction, then push in any direction.
Even a very, very small shift in the orbit is enough to send it way, way out of earth's path for a long time.
If they know about it now, and it's not scheduled to be a problem til 2135, we'll find a way to deal with it.
Would not be worried, even if I was going to live til then.

Cichlidfan ......"How did Haggart miss this thread?" 1 in 2700 chance is pretty good odds of a miss so no worries - and also this is only a photo which some of the people here believe is not hard evidence but "fake news". So in 2135 if humans haven't nuked themselves out of existence there is a very tiny chance that they might get that "hard evidence" 1.2 gigatons isn't the end of the world by a long shot. The other hemisphere should by OK. Remember Max ..... while the impact would kill millions or billions of people ...... the worst could be realized especially if hits dry land which is the dust cloud after impact circling the earth's atmosphere and blocking most of the sunlight for up to a year or longer. This would plunge the earth into an ice age wiping out many (if not most) of the animals and plants .... and us right along with them

Guess I can run my air conditioner, use spray cans, drive my hummer and package everything in plastic without worry to the environment then.

In keeping with the apocalypse thinking in this thread is : https://www.yahoo.com/news/britain-apos-four-meals-away-060000661.htmlAnd it is not just a UK vulnerability.

Yeah not something we are used to now - power cuts. We used to count on having a few weeks without power every winter, even up until I sold my house in the far north of Scotland in 2010 we still got power cuts lasting more than a few days at a time. We did a lot of trade during those times being the only premises with our own electricity generating system. Biggest fear was running out of either diesel or petrol to run the generators to keep the freezers supplied. But yes in the cities and urban areas then it could be very bad, very bad indeed. I do still keep a multifuel stove and a spirit burning stove, I think I have used them twice in the past 8 years. I have solar panels here but you need to feed them with mains electricity before they will work as they use that to sync the inverters and they won't work without it.

that's why i keep a portable generator handy - there are people too that may soon start shutting off power plants
