A lot of very brave men died that day.

Not much French landed that day on their own soil , the well known n°4 Commando aka Commando Kieffer and the less known French SAS in Britanny (operations Samwest and Dingon)

I had family that went on those beaches.... they all came home too.

Different world back then.

kaa,

Nos 1 and 8 Troop, No. 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando (attached to No. 4 Commando) 6 June Capitaine de frégate Philippe Kieffer

4ème Bataillon d'Infanterie de l'Air 4e BIA (2ème Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutistes 2e RCP from 1 August) / (4th SAS) 6 June Capitaine Pierre-Louis Bourgoin

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Never forget. Thank you to all of those men who marched into hell on behalf of not only their generation but generations to come. We stand on the shoulders of giants. Freedom is not free and never has been. Unfathomable cost is involved as both men and women throughout the ages have stared into the face of darkness declaring "NO."

I still have the letter my grandfather was given from Eisenhower in almost as perfect condition.

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/dwighteisenhowerorderofdday.htm

He never once spoke of his time on the beaches, but kept the letter in pristine condition in his locked bureau, and would take it out every anniversary of the landings to read it.

Respect.

God Bless 'em all. A former Cadet Commander of mine Harold "wakey" Mosdell RN was among the first on Sword beach bringing in some Royal Marines.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to all of that generation who saved the world for us.

God bless those of the 'greatest generation', of 'all' nations, who fought for freedom on that day.
And especially those who fought on the beaches, June 6, 1944.

I've always wondered why the allies didn't lay a smoke screen on the bluffs as they hit the Normandy beaches.
