Do you like them? I have enjoyed sardines for some time but only recently tried a kippered (smoked) herring for the second time and really loved it. It tasted great as it came out of the can, but it was even better with some Louisiana hot sauce. Any suggestions?

I am already intrigued. I shall try them with rice for starters.

I can give you my preferences...

Kippered herring is my favorite, but I also like to mix it up a bit. I dislike most canned "Chicken of the Sea," brand, especially their sardines (right can)...

Costco's sardines are pretty good, a little drier and taste to me more like tuna. Good for a Mediterranean style salad (I had a pasta version of this for lunch)...

Canned octopus is fantastic, smoked oysters are usually good depending on brand (again my least favorite is Chicken of the Sea), and smoked mussels are hit-and-miss...

My favorite sardines are usually the cheapest in mustard sauce or olive oil, and the numbers are pretty good...

King Oscars are good too but a little pricier (~$2.00 vs. ~$1.00), I get tired of them sometimes and go back to the cheaper cans (bigger and single-layered)...

I give Timothy credit for the hot sauce idea, he puts it on tuna.

Can't say I've ever had any of those or anchovies. Just the usual canned tuna.
Might consider trying it on a pizza or po-boy, but not cold.

Yep!
Crown Prince Sardines in mustard are in the pantry right now, alongside some Bumble Bee tuna. I also go for canned salmon -- great for salmon patties, or scrambled with egg over rice. Canned oysters are also great but for some reason I only get them on occasion.

Tabasco sauce FTW.

Love canned tuna with loads of tabasco or fresh groundpepper.
Anything else is a "no, no", particularly anchovies. Those are full of nastiness.

Cheers,
Slug

Brunswick is my brand of choice. Sardines 'old fashioned' style ..packed in oil. Kippers are not bad but I like 'uncanned' ones best smile

A major favourite of my youth was King Oscar
olive oil sardines, just a sandwich of home
made whole wheat bread, and butter. A lunch
option for all my k-12 school years. Tuna
sandwiches were with lettuce and celery and
mayo, but the sardines always just plain.

I prefer my fish fresh thank you, sardines are ok and anchovies are great on pizza but mackerel has to be fresh even smoked mackerel I find a bit meh.

Now the wife... she loves maatjes haring met ui (kind of pickled herring with raw onion), smoked mackerel, tinned fish of most sorts.

I liked sardines the first time i tried them and the clencher was that none of my buddies liked them, so when we went on adventures, and pooled our pack's grub, i usually had them all to my self. I like them in olive oil, mustard, or spicy tomato. I always had a bottle of Texas Pete in my pack and hard tack, just in case.

Looks like you're already on to the hot sauce.
Kippered snacks are also good with Apple Cider Vinegar.

Love smoked oysters too. I've not yet found a sauce to add to them that I enjoy though. I've tried several hot sauces, but I think they are just over powered. Come to think of it, I've never added any kind of BBQ sauce....
