The 59th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!  War of the EuroFollowing the financial crises of 2008 and 2010, the Eurozone was transformed. Greece was bailed out in 2011 with 260 billion Euro and Spain took 490 billion in 2012. Draconian measures were enforced across Mediterranean countries. This included offering for sale Spain's sole Aircraft carrier, 6 Santa Maria-Class frigates, and the announcement of the disbandment of the Italian submarine force. Crews were laid off with immediate effect. In spite of these rescue funds, on Jan 2013, Spain and Greece defaulted on their debt payments. Northern Europe, facing a collapsing Euro and economy, bailed out both countries again. However, on June 9th 2013 Europe woke up to a surprise announcement. Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece all left the Euro at the same time. They announced that all debts would be converted to their new currency, the Certecius. In addition, the countries left the European Union, left NATO, formed a new pact called the Mediterranean Union, and appointed as its first President: Silvio Berlusconi. Immediately the Certecius halved in value against the Euro, which itself halved against the US dollar. The Eurozone creaked under pressure of the written-off debt to Italy, Spain, and Greece, and under the burden of debt to the Americans. EU president Guy van Rompes abdicated and Frau Dr Merkel, widely seen as the European equivalent to Margaret Thatcher, took the EU role. She promptly issued an ultimatum: the Mediterranean Unions debt, which largely matures on January 6 2015, is to be re-paid in Euros. The 60th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!  14.0 A Friend in NeedSea of Dragons Battleset - Two Brothers - China invades Taiwan China flexes its muscles with lots of exercises around Taiwan. Although diplomatic objections are raised by a number of nations, the exercises continue. Then, the PRC declares a maritime blockade: any ships entering the waters around Taiwan will be stopped and 'contraband' goods confiscated. 'Contraband' is loosely defined, but vessels carrying coal, oil, and LNG would appear to be favoured targets. As coal, oil, and LNG stocks fall, the Taiwanese navy starts to escort convoys through the blockade zone. Then, something goes wrong. A convoy is intercepted and somebody fires on someone they shouldn't have. The PRC immediately launches an invasion fleet. This scenario was inspired by the situation depicted in the Sea of Dragons publication from Clash of Arms. The charge, led by Colonel Yamasaki, penetrated U.S. lines far enough to encounter shocked rear-echelon units of the American force. After furious, brutal, close-quarter, and often hand-to-hand combat, the Japanese force was killed almost to the last man: only 28 prisoners were taken, none of them officers. U.S. burial teams counted 2,351 japanese dead, but it was presumed that hundreds more had been buried by naval, air, and artillery bombardments over the course of the battle. After the war, the United States government decided to construct a LORAN station on the southern tip of Attu, at Theodore Point. This installation was manned by the United States Coast Guard. The 13th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!  The Pueblo Incident "A sterner test of Phase One morale occurred during the first half of March 1968. Following the seizure of the USS Pueblo, two carriers with their screens were sent far north to the Sea of Japan. A contingency plan was invoked that committed the Enterprise and Ticonderoga to launch air strikes against North Korean airfields. Air Force planes in South Korea were to have coordinated with the two navy air wings, but it was still a vastly lopsided proposition. The carriers were assigned seven airfields at which were based more than two hundred MiGs. Intelligence briefings detailed the enemy order of battle: ninety-one MiG-21s, seventy-six MiG-17s, and thirty-five MiG-19s. It was estimated that at least half the North Korean fighter force would be airborne by the time the strikes arrived. Against this, we had twenty operational Phantoms and eighteen Crusaders to escort the strike birds. The fighters were spread mighty thin. One target was to be struck by ten A-4s escorted by a pair of F-8s. Nobody slept much that night. A good many farewell letters were written in expectation of the worst, though "the worst" varied from one man to another, according to his outlook. If forced down alive, the pilots knew they faced brutal captivity in a land ruled by barbarians. A safe bailout into the sea was only marginally more attractive -- the water was studded with ice, and even in "poopy suits" survival would be measured in minutes. Yet nobody backed out. Launch was scheduled for 0600, and at 0430 aircrews were suiting up or eating breakfast. The briefings were grim. There was absolutely no joking. But sometime before 0500 word came through that the mission was scrubbed. It was never known if political considerations swayed the decision makers in Washington, or if military reality forced itself upon them. In either case, two air wings heaved a collective sigh of relief. But the point worth making is that morale held. Knowing the odds against returning were extremely slim, every pilot assigned to the strike would have manned his airplane and launched. They would rather died than looked bad." The 20th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year!  20.0 Opening Shots [H3.6] Sea of Dragons Battleset - The Chinese Sea It did not take long for the full import of the U.S. withdrawal from the Philippines to become apparent. U.S. presence declined in the South China Sea and this allowed other navies greater freedom. The PLA(Navy), under strict orders from Beijing, stepped up its patrols around the Spratley archipelago. The Vietnamese and the Philippines vigorously protested this action, but not much was done to help them. By 1998, the Chinese felt confident enough to make a determined push for the whole of the island chain. By controlling the Spratleys, the PLA(Navy) would be in position to threaten busy shipping routes; the forces assigned there would also cover the Chinese invasion of the Philippines. Once the Philippines had fallen, no one would be able to oust the Chinese from their sea. Much was carried out to ensure the smooth running of the initial stages of the operation. Vietnam was bribed into hamstringing the ASEAN response and the Philippine communist insurgency was expanded and financed by the PRC. Chinese Special Forces were clandestinely inserted to advise the guerrillas. All that was needed was a spark. The 8th NEW Indochine Campaign scenario!08 Ghost CarrierCENTRAL PACIFIC: Papua/New Guinea/E Australia: In 1985, the Australians sold their Majestic-class carrier, HMAS Melbourne to the Chinese for scrap. After a much star-crossed journey, it was finally delivered to Port Huangpu almost two months later. However, the ship was not scrapped immediately. In fact, it was not scrapped at all. After world interest in its fate waned and became caught up in more important issues, the Chinese secretly began to refit the old warhorse. They began to train pilots in carrier operations, and unbeknownst to the rest of the world, the first Chinese operational carrier was developed - their most guarded secret. Long after the events that brought the Chinese a first-class navy with several well known and celebrated carrier squadrons, the Chinese Indochines still kept their little secret. The 9th NEW Indochine Campaign Scenario!09 The Perth IncidentEAST INDIAN OCEAN: Indonesia/Malaysia/W Australia: Barely past the second month of the war, and Perth finds it's extensive naval base blockaded with mines. Enemy subsurface forces managed to find a way in and mined all deep sea-lane approaches to the naval facilities in the harbor. With their embarrassment complete, the commanding officers and staff assigned to Perth have tendered their resignations effective immediately, and the incoming command staff has been left with the unenviable task of fixing a most disastrous situation. Compounding the problem is the fact that a large number of Allied ships, which were in port after conducting combined fleet exercises now find themselves bottled up in Perth. Worse still is the fact that the 2nd newly refitted Iwo Jima-class carrier, HMAS Kimberley, is soon to arrive with escorts and auxilliaries on a lend/lease program - all laden with supplies. With Allied assets locked up in port, is the HMAS Kimberley walking into an Indochine orchestrated trap? The clock is ticking to get an escort out of the harbor, and in a position to offer assistance to the newly arriving carrier group and convoy.
