I had visions of running rings around those Huns in their Albatross scouts in my N17. Like a little gnat tormenting a big wasp. But it it seems to be a very fragile little bug! I've killed myself three times already by ripping the wings off. Careful how you handle that stick, boys and girls!

RoF's first crap plane. The real issue is that it is terribly outclassed by it's 1918 adversaries. This is a late 1916 aircraft. Those lower wings are horribly fragile though.

Yes, the V strut is the cause. Notice the Albatros also has V strut, but has a support brace to keep the wing from flexing. They too suffered the same fate, until the brace was added.

In RL the earlier Nieuports were notorious for shedding their wings and/or fabric on the wings in steep dives.

Yep, that wing is fragile. I have managed not to break it yet but I think (going by sounds) I have come pretty close. This should not be a surprise if you know your WWI planes though, even in the description on the ROF Store page where you bought it states: These so called "one-and-half-wings" designs, like the N17, had an obvious design defect. Because the lower wings only contained one spar, the lower wing tended to fold and break off during high speed dives and maneuvers. There are only two known occasions when pilots made successful landings after losing their lower wings. Similar German designs suffered from this same problem.

I took off in the little bwger, got some altitude ,did a wing over into a dive pulled up into a stall turn then recovered to find I had lost my port elevator and about a foot of the top wing to go with it !

Is a sign of things to come (Hopefully) the planes are going to get tricker as we go back in time.
If we ever get an DH2, beware! Not too awfully tricky, I hope! I seem to recall hearing that the Eindecker, for example, had an abysmal roll rate thanks to the wing warping mechanism used for roll control...even worse than the N17's, which is pretty anemic. I'm seeing that you have to fly these planes like a 3-channel (rudder/elevator/throttle) R/C model for the most part. Rudder is primary for turn, with ailerons for fine tuning. Back on topic, I'm about to tear my hair out with the Nieuport 17. I haven't ripped a wing off yet, but it's rare to complete a landing (even some takeoffs!) without crunching one of the lower wings to some degree. One bump and they crumple. I mean, it's cool that with the great DM you can see individual wood ribs with lightening holes in them, but DAYUMMM I almost never suffer damage on takeoff or landing with the other planes. If I was a drinker, this would be driving me to the bottle... [MF] Gunloon
Love. You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
