IMHO, this will be an utter waste of time and resources for Universal. Universal is obviously trying to capitalize on the mega success of SW Episode VII but without the cast from the Ron Moore SyFy Channel series I don't think anyone will care to see it. Also, everything I've read so far seems to indicate that this new film will have a similar tone and feel to the original Glen Larson series from 1978. I don't think modern audiences will go for that. I forsee a significant box office loss here for Universal, http://variety.com/2016/film/news/battle...nt-list-wrapper

If it's anything like the original it's the equivalent of remaking a serious Flash Gordon. They done made a big mistake.

My personal theory is that they are doing this in order to give it a "tongue in cheek" feel similar to what we saw in "Guardians of the Galaxy". The assumption seems to be that if it worked for that film then it will work for ours!

I wish they would re-boot "Caprica" and continue the series from there. Yup, me too!! I'm still not quite over its cancellation and that was 5 years ago!

There are two possibilities.
It will fail, which is a pretty obvious and easy prediction to make.
It will succeed, due to unforeseen traits, much like GotG succeeded when no one thought it would.
We know too little about it right now to say anything one way or another. The announcement of producers is probably the least informative thing they could say about it.

The original BSG was basically riding on the coattails of Star Wars (before it was Ep. IV), so history is repeating itself and now BSG is riding on the coattails of Ep. VII. And when you think about it, Ep. VII was very similar to Ep. IV, so with BSG being more like the Glen Larson series, it's like deja vu all over again. as long as it doesnt go in any kind of long winded detail like NBSG did by the time season 4 rolled around.
I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

How can a 2 hour film do that anyway?

If you want a decently heavy story in 2 hours you're usually cramming things in, I don't think it'll get too long winded.

The fact that you can't tell a very deep story or have significant character arcs in a 2 hr film is the reason why many actors that used to be films-only have started doing television where they can spend 6, 10, 13, 20 hrs developing them.
For that matter, how many people have seen a play that was 2 hours or fewer? They usually last a few hours and have an intermission because not even Shakespeare could write a great play that took only 2 hours.

I'm probably the exception here but and therefore I'm glad to know that the Battlestar Galactica movie will be more similar to the original series than to the reimagined series. Personally I hated that all that religious/transcendence or whatever crap from the reimagined series! I actually liked the stuff from the original series where robot/AIs that were created by AN ANOTHER sentient (non-human) species which eventually turned against that same species and now they're fighting the human colonies. For the setting where robot/AIs that were created by Humans revolted against their creators (humans) we already have the Terminator movies/series and many other movies and series which touch the same subject and somehow mimic it. Honestly I don't need Battlestar Galactica to be a Terminator in space with a bunch of religious/transcendence crap! Besides, I admit that I didn't like the gender change on the Starbuck character of the reimagined series. To me this is like changing the gender of Spiderman or Superman or Batman! It doesn't make sense at all (at least to me). Anyway, lets hope that this movie will be at least "good" and won't disappoint. EDIT: If the 2 hour duration of the movie proves to be too short for the type of story of Battlestar Galatica, there's always the possibility of making a Battlestar Galatica 2 (and/or 3) movie

I just liked the fact that the new series was serious and had half realistic space battles. The earlier seasons were life on a carrier during wartime and were pretty good as a result.

The original BSG and the reimagined BSG were each made with very different target audiences in mind. The original was made to specifically appeal to kids and teenagers so hence its campiness and light-heartedness. The reimagined BSG was made for adults and thus it had adult themes and a much darker tone.
To each their own as they say. Are you trying to say that because I don't like that religious/transcendence crap of the reimagined BSG that I'm not an adult?

For what's worth I agree with you, the space battles in the reimagined BSG are (obviously) much better than the ones of the original series. However I believe that was more due to the (brutal) evolution in "special effects" such as CGI which was basically inexistent back when the original series were made than anything else.
