It wasn't a bad film or we wouldn't still be talking about it 30+ years later, much less getting a sequel.
Might not have been "art", as if any big production could be, but it's a beloved flick and entertaining as hell. That's about all I can ask of a movie and puts it well ahead of most.
The military used to have recruiters in the lobby of the movie theater when Top Gun released. That certainly wasn't because people were leaving unhappy.
