As a kid I watched Star Blazers and G-Force but somewhere my mom rented a copy of this and it was my first deep dive into Anime. The bitter-sweet story and powerful animation whet my appetite for films like Akira and Ghost in the Shell to follow. You should give it a whirl if you never have. Plus, the Cosmo Dragoon is still my gold standard for a sci-fi laser gun!

I got my copy through Amazon but most electronics retailers have a link up....

The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

The art style is identical to Captain Harlock. I bet they were done by the same artist, writer and producer. Looking at the wiki, there are definitely some crossover episodes, too. If you've never watched Harlock, you should. Back when television was episodic and non-linear, Harlock, as well as Star Blazers(to a lesser degree), serialized their episodes to have one continuous and developing plotline. Anime was intelligent and like reading a great novel, very sophisticated with mature themes. Definitely like nothing else on American TV at the time, and the best part was us kids got to enjoy those shows while the adults were oblivious they existed.

"Kids shows" anime was not.

Yes! Harlock, Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) and Galaxy Express 999 were all by Leiji Matsumoto and Captain Harlock even shows up in Galaxy Express 999. I tried to draw like him for years afterwards...

Lets forget the Live Action movie of StarBlazers(Space Bttleship Yamato)..
Heard rumours of Sir Peter Jacksons name being thrown around for (Robotech) Macross Live Action.
