Best version ever, IMHO.

And I am a Merle/Willie devotee.

Li’lJugs, you are and I are so often in synch, but not on this. The pace was too slow and that song calls for a grittier and sharper delivery.

Willie tops it.

Thanks for sharing. These two are talented certainly(not my taste though)but I do not care for this. For me my favorite versions are Emmylou circa 1970s and Willie. A great song though. Townes Van Zandt was an interesting fellow. I have a documentary on him. Found out he was good friends with one of my all time favorites Mickey Newbury.

Have to agree, Willie and Waylon nailed it, even better than Van Zandt did IMO.
Sometimes a great song just needs the right artist.

I understand what you all are saying, I just found the "less gritty" version highly appealing. So, OK, maybe not the all time best rendition, but...

Some other versions . . .

Steve Earle

Rosanne Cash

Delbert McClinton

Hoyt Axton

Hard to beat any version with Merle but hard to second guess one from TVZ himself . . .

That's part of why I love music so much and see it as a wonderful and mysterious gift from God given to all people for all times. He's got a lot of instruments in His band(all kinds of singers offering up their particular gift in vocals and style of music)and there's someone and something for everyone. One style of music or voice may nourish one person while someone else may get nurtured and fed with something totally different. Either way God made provision to feed our spirit and soul.

My favourite has to be the one David Kennard posted of Townes from the movie Heartworn Highway, theres something magical about that moment.
Sadly a lot of his later performances and live recordings show that the life he was living was taking its toll, and were often below par. This could well be one of the reasons that a lot of Van Zandt tunes are better known and appreciated in cover versions. As a songwriter and and an "musicians musician" he made one hell of an impact though, there are so many up and coming acts that still to this day mention TVZ as a major influence.
