I will say this much. I absolutely loved Moore as Bond when I was a kid but when I rewatched his movies as an adult I liked them a lot less. He just played the role too tongue in cheek and lighthearted but that's what the producers wanted during that time in the 70's and early 80's.
This is not a knock against Moore himself since I do think he's a talented actor.

Yeah, age matters for sure and we expected campiness back then, it was fun. Except that I still enjoy them as an adult, although I own most 007's on VHS/DVD, including Daniel Craig's first three (don't have "Spectre" yet). But then, I was also crazy about Sci-Fi until my mid-teens, then it dropped off my radar. Everything to that point I can still enjoy today.
Too much s**t today just isn't any fun anymore, although *I* still have fun with the old s**t!

The Bond franchise tried to go serious and dark with Timothy Dalton but audiences weren't ready for that and hence they stayed away and both films were money losers. Sometimes it's all about the timing.

Dalton's my favorite Bond. I never understood why the films bombed that way.

Look at the big action films that graced theater screens in that time and you'll see why. People were into spectacle like Arnold's films, with one-liner quips (which Connery was doing long before Arnold was ever on film) and beyond-belief setups.
That said, there are some things in the Dalton films that were still over-the-top, but compared to the Moore films it was like drinking black coffee after a six pack.
Dalton played a good angry Bond, which Moore never really did. He played cold. Moore however could play a great whimsical and debonair Bond and Dalton never succeeded with that. Remember that Dalton had almost no quips, while Robert Davi spouted them off. I really felt like both Connery and Moore were using the women to get what they needed, while Dalton seemed more...I don't know, grateful?

Because Dalton wanted to give Bond an emotional depth where there is none. Bond is an archetype: he comes from nowhere, saves the day and vanishes again.

But that's exactly what Daniel Craig has done with the role and all 4 films with him so far have done very well at the box office.

Made worse by the fact that it was a comedic actor like Dalton trying to do 'dark'.

On the contrary, he was great on Penny Dreadful and that was a role with no light at all.
Just because you're a good actor doesn't mean you're right for any part. Dalton wasn't Bond. It would've been interesting had Brosnan come in then instead and tried to do those films. I think they would've done better. Of course, once he did come in they assumed gritty was wrong and his Bonds swung back towards the Moore ways.

That Flash Gordon film may have been campy as hell but it also has a ton of memorable quotes and of course the music by Queen rocked.
