Yeah, I know this is an extremely difficult list to come up with especially if you are a fan of a TON of different artists and it's also a list subject to change as we get older but I'm curious to see what you guys post.
All of these songs on my list I've listened to at least 100 times or more and will never get tired of listening to them. Most of them are definitely mainstream classic songs but a few are a bit more obscure to the general public. Also, my top 25 is in no particular order of rank.
1. Hey Jude - Beatles 2. Africa - Toto 3. Vienna - Ultravox 4. Die Roboter - Kraftwerk 5. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones 6. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen 7. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd 8. The Musical Box - Genesis 9. Red Barchetta - Rush 10. More than a Feeling - Boston 11. Every Breath You Take - The Police 12. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin 13. Baba O'Reily - The Who 14. Proud Mary - CCR 15. Give me all your loving - ZZ Top 16. Hells Bells - AC/DC 17. One - Metallica 18. One - Three Dog Night 19. In Dreams - Roy Orbison 20. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd 21. Sister Golden Hair - America 22. Xanadu - Rush 23. Telephone Line - ELO 24. Supper's Ready - Genesis 25. A Day in the Life - Beatles
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
Just the first 25 songs that presented themselves in my mind, and in the order in which they arrived there. I've tried to include only one song per artist.
Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles Feel Like Going Home – Charlie Rich Harry Nilsson – The Moonbeam Song Celluloid Heroes – The Kinks Georgia – Ray Charles I’m Mandy, Fly Me – 10CC Sunset Boulevard – City Boy Distant Shores – Roylance & Galvin The Thrill is Gone - BB King Deborah’s Theme – Ennio Morricone Christchurch Bells – Hothouse Flowers Christmascard from a Hooker – Tom Waits My Blue Wave – Lambchop The Colour of Spring – Mark Hollis Heaven and Alchemy – Siouxsie Sioux Vince Guaraldi – Linus and Lucy Mandocello – Cheap Trick Wichita Lineman – Glenn Campbell Lost weekend - Godley & Creme Missing – Everything But The Girl Nobody’s Sweetheart – Lady Blackbird Et Misericordia – Kim André Arnesen Dark Sweet Lady - George Harrisison Nobody Loves You when You’re Down and Out – John Lennon Admiral Halsey – Paul Mccartney

That's quite an eclectic list there McGonigle and I must admit I only know 4 of the songs on your list!

I think the video for this song is absolutely brilliant. A must watch for any student of German history.

The soundtrack for "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" is in my top 20 greatest movie soundtracks list of all time.

I like their version just as much as the original. The orchestra does have the advantage though of having some quite stunning ladies to look at.

I just listened to them both back to back and the Danish performance does indeed sound richer for want of a better word.
Now I don't know if this is true or not but I came across a comment during my many visits to YT that stated that Morricone did not have a massive budget for the music (unlike your typical Hollywood produced films) so instead he hired the best whistlers, percussion players etc to produce his unique music for the trilogy. That may help explain it... or not. All I know is that the music fits the films perfectly.

And besides the Westerns that Ennio brilliantly scored he also composed the music for John Carpenter's "The Thing" , "The Untouchables" and "Once Upon a Time in America".

That is an impossible list Panzer but I think I could safely and easily put Ennio Morricone's "The Mission" soundtrack on the list but since I can only pick one then definitely "Gabriel's Oboe". I would also add Mickey Newbury's "American Trilogy".
I cannot break down my favorites to a top 25. I like so many bands. And with me, it is whatever hits me in the moment. From chill to rocking out. Top 25 bands I could probably do.
Hard to pick and rank 25, and you guys already have listed plenty of candidates.
Some additions that you might have to squeeze into your rankings
Blue Monday - New Order
(2016 remix on the bands channel; For the full experience, you might go for the original 12" ~15mins version - alas, with a stupid commercial in the middle :
In the air tonight - Phil Collins (here in a live version)

I agree that music very much depends on your mood at the time but my personal top 25 is mostly based on the fact that I can listen to those songs at any time and any place regardless of my mood.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
How about a bit of saxophone... Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
If I had to pick a greatest Depeche Mode song, it would have to be Personal Jesus, or maybe Enjoy the Silnece or Everthing Counts. But a go to song and version I often come back to is the stripped down version of Home (live Barcelona 2010) - Depeche Mode
Then I thought of ABBA - objectively there might be other bigger songs, but my preferred one would be Eagle (long version, and it has to be the long version, with the solos!) - ABBA
Speaking of ABBA, there is another song of theirs, but where I prefer the cover version Arrival - Mike Oldfield
And then there is this version, your choice:
Speaking of cover versions that I prefer over the original, With a little help from my friends - Joe Cocker (but not the Woodstock version because I can't stand the abysmal background vocals...) (sorry Beatles fans, but remember, I didn't say the Beatles version is bad, just that I prefer Joe's)
