What would you say are your top 5 crime thriller/mystery films of all time?

My list,

1. Silence of the Lambs

2. M

3. Se7en

4. Gone Girl

5. The Usual Suspects

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with "M", it's a German film from 1931 starring Peter Lorre and directed by Fritz Lang.

I preferred Manhunter to Silence of the Lambs personally. Seven was amazing though I remember seeing that at the cinema on release and didn't see the end coming. Gone Girl is going to be a future classic.

My list,

1. Shawshank Redemption

2. Manhunter

3. Heat

4. LA Confidential

5. No Country For Old Men

I liked Jade, although it was more for the action scenes than the mystery. smile

However, I admit I never really classify the films I watch for the most part aside from 3 categories: SF/fantasy, comedy, and "other." As such, I'm really hard pressed to remember which films I've seen qualify.

I think Fritz Lang was the real master of suspense. Watch Woman in the Window and you'll see what I mean.

Not necessarily my favorite, but it left an impression on me when I was a sprout, it tended to coincide with my interest in film noir and dark subject matter at the time, along with The Twilight Zone.

I always liked "The Spanish Prisoner". In part because it shows how talented an actor Steve Martin is.

Great thread PM! ArgonV listed most of my favorites, but haven't seen these great 70's thrillers mentioned:

Dog Day Afternoon (with Pacino)
Serpico

Most of the films I would pick are already listed with the exception of Memento.
A very complex well made movie.IMO

Some of these like Gattaca or Minority Report would never have occurred to me. I already classified them as SF so I discounted them.
