There must have been some major mix-up to let something like that happen ! What were they thinking? Unbelievably silly. ouch BEWARE: colourful language (english) and spelling :-( Cheers, Slug

Not enough background info on the event and coordiation to speak about who was at fault. But the man with the RC airplane seemed more worried about his toy than the human life in the real airplane. Worry about your toy once the real person is down and safe. I was troubled by his lack of concern about another persons life.
Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Worry about your toy once the real person is down and safe. I was troubled by his lack of concern about another persons life. In the beginning after the collision he seemed pretty concerned to me. He even said "I could have killed the pilot." His tone changed after the air boss said the plane was on the ground, he commented on 2k and 8k gone.

that's called prop-hanging. A common trick for high performance aerobatic rc airplane. That rc model is probably equipped with a 100cc gas engine, so power-to-weight ratio is all in power's favour ! No mod needed, just good throttle, elevator and rudder coordination.
Cheers, Slug

First blush - this is why the FAA is trying to impose draconian restrictions on RC aircraft.
Second thought - stupid pilot. He was running smoke, which means he was showing off and violated a lot of rules:
1) Pay attention to the local notes for the airfield. 2) Didn't see the people STANDING ON THE RUNWAY? Really? 500 feet from any person or structure, numbnuts. 3) Uncontrolled airspace does not equal Anarchy Airspace. I'm learning to hate a certain class of pilots who seem to think it is.

That's why the reg specifies people and structures - deer are zoomable!

Pilot disobeyed instruction, its his fault. The RC guy was not at fault. That said the '8000$' is an overestimate. The airframe on the plane is probably 2-3000$ (assuming its a really good one), the engine is under 1000. The electronics will all be retrieveable and reusable.
The word "Martyr" is just a fancy name for "crappy fighter".

There was obviously a show going on at the airport, which should have caused the Pitts pilot to be extra vigilant. He sure wasn't. That RC plane was half the size of a real one, so don't know how the Hell he missed it. He's got some explaining to do. The RC pilot was doing nothing wrong. There was an RC airplane meet ,going on, so you should expect that RC planes are going to be flying. Even as a pilot, myself, I'm gonna have to say this goes 100% on the Pitts flyer. There's no way he can claim he was going to land and had to do a go- around, either. He was pulling smoke, so had no intention to land. And besides, there were people practically ON the runway. Don't know what he was thinking. Then again, he obviously wasn't.

Actually you may descend below the minimum safe altitude if you are in position to make a safe landing as per the reg. So, at some point he could argue the safe landing was no longer an option and a go around was necessary. He was still a penis maximus, but small airports are full of them on weekends. Did that guy look even remotely like he was making a landing approach? And the minimum altitude is both "that which allows for a safe (ememergency) landing" with the caveat of 500 from any building or person. Zoom the lake with no boaters. Zoom an empty field. It might not be wise, but it's legal. Zoom a group of people and you're flying both unsafely and illegally. If he would have crashed after hitting the RC plane and killed people, think the NTSB and FAA would shrug and say he was within the letter of the rules? He should have his ticket pulled for at least six months and a hefty fine thrown at him for such reckless behavior.

Thats when he got pissed. Looks like poor control of the airfield and poor pilot choice.

You would never get that without "careless" thrown in and even then it hardly raises more than a 30 day suspension and more likely negotiated down to a 10 day one. I'd lobby for no suspension. After all..if Senator Inhofe can willfully land on a closed runway without any certificate action then we should all be able to get away with anything. As for the accident in the video..I don't know if that was a tower controlled field or not. Just because some yahoo with a handheld receiver is giving instructions doesn't mean that he is an air traffic controller.
