Dont Shoot
I'm really looking forward to see this FW and others in the air soon as they can but they didn't get it.
Yikes! I agree with Goodwood on something.

You would think with a close to a million doller aircraft about ready to fly they would have done some homework. There certainly is enough written info now for those people to have gotten it right.
I cringed when I saw how that guy applied the mottling.
It's all wrong,wrong,wrong.

No, THIS is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Though I agree with your points about the 190 paint, too.

I beleive I have seen that aircraft fly, or one similar to it. "Pink"

I read the entire topic before looking at the video and from the comments and knowing how sensitive I am about stuff like this I thought I was gonna be sick form wathing it \:\)

I really don't think it's THAT bad, I aggree that the scheme would be more fitting on an A-3 or A-4 and that there's tons of cool A-8 schemes out there, but for the scheme it self, it's quite allright in mu opinon. To begin with the colors are great, not the blueish grey usually seen and as for the eagle, it was unit-applied. There where no rules for it, these things varied.

"but if the owner(s) can pony up the seven figures to buy one, they can paint it however they'd like..."

For me, this argument is not really valid. If I had the money to buy the Joconde, could I so paint big moustaches on her face? Or if I had the money to buy the Constitution of the USA, could I just use it to set fire to my barbecue?
No, it's simply a question of good taste. If you look for exemple at the car or the motorcycle restoration areas, you would never see a car or a motorcyle, with an historical value, be repainted in the "gonzo" way.

"but if the owner(s) can pony up the seven figures to buy one, they can paint it however they'd like..."

Come on, if you have the money to pay you a one million dollars Mustang, you have probably too the money to get it hangared after the show. No, frankly, WWII aircrafts painted with glossy finishes, even if they are the most authentic ones, just look like toys or cheap replicas.

"...but again, the owners have the cash, and can finish them however they'd like."

In fact, good taste is the only thing that you can't buy.

"No, THIS is wrong, wrong, wrong."

Good example of real bad taste with this P-40! It is a real shame, because amazing AND authentic possible finishes for the P-40 (and even with shark mouthes) are so numerous.

By the way, here is a 190 with the eagle head, which looks quite right:

What's the matter with you lot?
Be thankful we will probably be lucky enough to see it fly at some stage, which is a miracle in itself..
(Grumble.. whine.. paintjob.. whinge.. moan.. wrong colours.. blah.. I'm sorry, Couldn't possibly fly that, it's in the wrong colour.. Meoww.. pffft..)

"... it's quite allright in mu opinon."

Again, "quite" is not enough for such an expansive toy.

If a teen painting his 15 dollars plastic model can look at some documentation and airbrush it with care, why can't a team, with big pockets, do the same?

In fact, warbirds should always be judged the very same way plastic models are judged at competitions, as they are both in some way re-creations of something real from the past.

1: originality of the choosen finish.
2: accuracy of the colors, letterings and markings.
3: quality of the color applying.

P.S. I've also noted something interesting about this subject. I dont know if the British warbirds owners have more taste than the others, but I've never seen a British warbird painted with wrong colors or glossy finish.

It just bummed me out a bit after watching this 190 for almost a year, then putting up this post and have it dumped on right away. It makes you feel like you're an idiot for liking it lol.

Maybe building the plane and getting ready for the engine startup trials didn't leave them enough time to sit on their 4ss reading boring thick books about LW markings and then start a pompous river-counter debate about it \:D

Cheers

CHDT, I think the point you're trying to make is that of stewardship, and it is valid. But Warbird stewardship is anything but universally accepted in the Warbird community. Paul Allen takes it very seriously, some Reno air racers less so. But stewardship is a matter of choice, like drinking a fine wine rather than storing it, or buying a famous painting and defacing it. The U.S. Constitiution is not now, nor will it ever be, for sale however, though again I get your point.

Authenticity in aircraft markings is still a relatively new trend in Warbirds, and not every owner has taken a drink of that particular Kool-Aid yet, though the ranks are swelling. Remember "Baa Baa Black Sheep"? They flew around in generic dark blue paint jobs, nowhere near authentic VMF-214 colors, and if you were like me, you ate it up every week. Cavalier Mustangs were painted like business jets, or Cessnas of the period. Here at least, the painter is going from a reference paint scheme, and actually hit it pretty closely. It just happened to be the wrong reference.

Some things aren't going to be reproducible, except by the true (and truely rich) die-hards. I'd love to see Warbirds with flat, oil stained paint, steel armor plate, (de-milled) guns, and wartime rated engines. But flat paint is a b*tch to keep serviceable, especially when the plane is expected to be around for decades, instead of a year or two before it's lost in combat or declared war weary and struck off charge. Engines are de-tuned because overhauling one of those babies also costs a fortune, and because 100/130 isn't refined for aviation any more, and even 100LL costs a fortune And don't even think about what it costs to insure one of these.

This 190 paint job does some things I like (semi gloss paint), some I don't (more thourogh research), and some I'm ambivalent about (the exclusion of the Hakenkreuz). I like the eagle motif, even if not 100% accurate, and applicable to the A-4. Seeing as how we don't have any A-4's available in the Warbird market, this isn't a completely sacrilegious compromise, and I'll bet the owner(s) thought the same thing. Is the owner of an FM-2 a heretic if he paints it in an F4F-3 scheme? http://www.courtesyaircraft.com/ (check under "inventory")

The comparison to cars got me thinking too. While "concours" restorations are common today (the trend is away from "better than new" restorations, to authentic restorations, down to reproducing production line chalk marks and overspray), that's not the case thoughout the collector/exotic car population. Chip Foose does great work, but I'd hardly call any of them historic restorations. In these rarified heights, only the rich need apply, and unfortunately money doesn't always equal skill, or attention to historical detail. http://www.wreckedexotics.com/

I'd like to see exotic cars sold only to those with the skill to drive them, and Warbirds sold only to those with the anal-retentive attention to historical detail that we in this community tend to have. Neither is likely to happen, so if you choose to stand on the beach and curse the tide, don't be surprised if you get wet.

This is very very close to the real thing kit though. If it were a "Black 6" or another authentic 109 or 190 to me it would be different. On the other hand what the heck is this??

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1d/FW_190_A8_1.jpg

This is another Flug Werk but I don't like this one. I've never seen a JG 54? I think? Like this. Unless it's not done yet.
