Would it be:

1. Someone who plays a complete Silent Hunter mission with no time compression.

2. Someone who reads every single book and journal in Skyrim instead of just looking for the skill increase books.

3. Someone who finishes a Total War campaign on "legendary" AND never auto-resolves a battle.

Any other examples? biggrin

It's actually an endangered species, that the game industry does no longer recognize or cares to cater to.

It used to be someone who would take a weekend off to play a new game, spend thousands on a rig and peripherals with a mock up cockpit and be an intense fan of a handful of games, if not just an expert on one - with actual skill. Also someone who knew what the settings meant on the configuration screen and could work out small game/hardware issues by themselves or with little help.

If you do not recognize them now, most of us just have to look in the mirror, because we are that by most people's standards these days.

Someone at work asked me a year or so ago what was my hobby, and I tried to explain what military sims/games were (in terms a child could understand). When I told them about what a HOTAS was, they looked at me like I was a crazy person. Now they call me "The Pilot" when they introduce me to new staff.

So now when they ask I tell them that I play games on my computer, you know, like DOOM and Warcraft, so they go - Ah...yes. And they proceed to tell me how much better is to play Candy Crush on a modern tablet.

Then I talk about the network and scare them away.

brings up an interesting topic: there are different social classes within gamers. there's ones that are financially well off, educated, have free time, (or at least a few of them factors), to engage in very civilized hobbies such as flight sims.
there are also ones that play games to their personal lives' turmoil or simply don't want nothing better to do.

the lines are sometimes blurred between the 2 in specific cases but i feel it's somehow a simplified summary. the latter category really needs rehab, have seen the news and it's happened.

You mean like the guy in South Korea who played Starcraft (I think it was Starcraft) for like 40 hours straight and ended up dying?

oh got a real life story of my (ex)colleague fresh outta college. was the boss' son. But he played world of warcraft to no end. he would play during the day hiding in his office and stayed in it after work and played until 4am or later and drove home in the morning telling the parents that he'd been asleep. in the office he was basically a zombie and he often made up things to tell us what he'd done on the job. obviously we'd later found out those didn't happen.
he's now doing well but that wasn't a happy ending chapter.

honestly his family is well off so at least there is a cushion. i'm actually sympathetic to those e-sports deaths, for kids with no future it can be a way out (big $$ if win).

As I have aged and matured, I have come to the belief that being a "hardcore gamer" is less about the kinds of games you play and more about the amount of time you have to spend, and do spend, playing the kinds of games you like.

Candy Crush and Hay Day would typically be classified as "Casual" back in the day.

But someone who spends a lot of money in the store for those games can hardly be classified as a "filthy casual".

And someone who plays those games for hours every day, to the exclusion of other things, can hardly be labeled as a "filthy casual".

If you think that tapping on a screen for 8 hours is anything close to a dedicated simmer that prides themselves for using the right controllers, studies their dash-1 manuals, checklists, airport approach charts, and memorizes dozens, if not, hundreds of key press procedures - just so that he can be proficient when joining their virtual band of brothers online and not let them down ...

I do not know what to say.

In a post, you illuminate the appeal and growth of the mobile gaming market.

I bet if I pay enough microtransactions I can be a super pro too, right?

No, I don't think that someone who plays Candy Crush for 8 hours is the same as someone who plays, and is proficient at, serious study sims.

But I would say that they are both hardcore, in their own games.

Not so much these days. but i could have been considered hardcore at one time.
But back in the day playing all night and going to work the next day. done that a few times
booking holidays when a title i was looking forward to was just released.
so i could play it in peace. Yep those were the days
