Mdwa, you're pretty low over that dock. You don't own that plane, the tax payers do! Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash!

Nice screens. Keep them coming. I tried to tweak my settings to get closer to your screen caps but couldn't pull it off. For various reasons, I'm tied to a lower screen resolution. But still enjoying flying the sim anyway.

haha - I actually just watched that movie the other day.... just finished reading this book (I recommend it):

http://www.amazon.com/ROGER-BALL-ODYSSEY-MONROE-FIGHTER/dp/1605280054
So I had to pull out the old 1986 movie and see how it compared...

Be careful when you take screens with FRAPS, for some reason it doesn't show Antialiasing etc in F18, better option to use the TSH/F18 screen capture (ALT S mapped on my keyboard) then it includes all you video card settings as you see in game. If only I could get rid of that sky banding I'd be very very happy...

I believe SweetFX does not support DX7 and F18 is DX7 is that correct?

Regards,
Marto.

I have that book and loved it. Another good one is Topgun Days. Also several from Rear Admiral Paul T. Gilchrist: Feet Wet, Vultures Row, Sea Legs, The Grumman F-14 Story. I think I'm going to make my wife watch Top Gun with me on May 13th, Official Top Gun Day. She thinks it's a love story so she'll actually watch it with me. Glad you mentioned the tip about Fraps. I was toying with the idea of attempting an after action report and just using fraps. Not that I really have the time to spend on it, but one day I might.

Yeah I've been thinking of doing an AAR soon too - I'm trying to complete the first mission of Just Reward campaign, but just with my self and wingman. It's the SEAD where you need the radars to light up and destroy the sam site. However the limited ordnance on two aircraft and the crap AI SEAD performance makes it hard to destroy everything at those SAM sites... and without losing a wingman... So I'm going to try with the full 8 aircraft as suggested in the mission briefing - might write that one up...

I love this sim, but yes, the AI is sometimes lacking. I eagerly await your AAR.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Using TSHv3.06 One Click Updater

Settings while flying F18:
Desktop Resolution: 1600x900

TSH Manager settings: see original post

Running F18.EXE as administrator and Win 98/ME compatibility.

Nvidia driver version 9.18.13.4788
Nvidia settings: see original post

FRAMERATES: I don't seem to get any AA slowdown. Framerates are high (see above images) and stay high. Sometimes though when I start a mission it starts with a low framerate just sitting on the deck about to launch - usually in the 30s or high 20s. However if I ALT TAB to desktop and then return, or, alternatively if I restart the mission this gets rid of the lower framerates and they stay high during the whole mission. I think vsync has a lot to do with framerates...

I get no CTDs, F18 doesn't crash when I alt tab to desktop.

I get the sky banding - see above photos - can't get rid of it - does anyone know how?

Any advice on settings to try are welcome.

So I updated my NVIDIA driver to 10.18.13.5900 and now I get the AA slowdown when looking at the HUD in AtoA mode. It goes from 80 fps to 2 fps with Sidewinders selected and 4 fps with Sparrows selected. See pics below... going to roll back drivers...

I don't understand the driver versions you're talking about. I am running nVidia driver 353.30 with no a-a slowdown problems.

[Note: I am entirely aware that 353.30 is not the latest driver version. It is not necessary to pounce on me to illustrate that fact. I will update it when I have a reason to do so.]

353.30 = 9.18.13.5330

For full driver ID go to Control Panel>System & Security>System>Device Manager
Double click Display Adapters then double click your graphics card then click Driver tab

I did some testing with Nvidia Driver versions (mine is GTX 760):
9.18.13.4788 (347.88) Good - no AA slowdown
9.18.13.5012 (350.12) Good - no AA slowdown
9.18.13.5286 (352.86) Good - no AA slowdown
9.18.13.5306 (353.06) Great - increased fps
9.18.13.5330 (353.30) Great - as above
9.18.13.5362 (353.62) Great - as above
9.18.13.5560 (355.60) NO GOOD - massive AA slowdown
...
10.18.13.5891 (358.91) NO GOOD - massive AA slowdown
10.18.13.5900 (359.00) NO GOOD - massive AA slowdown
10.18.13.5906 (359.06) NO GOOD - massive AA slowdown

Didn't test the ones between 355.60 and 358.91, but would hazard a guess that they are no good.

RhinoX55 - try updating to 355.60 or higher and see if you get the AA slowdown - would be interesting to confirm it is driver related. You can always rollback easily...
