Are you talking Power Play, or just the major powers in general? I've done Naval missions for both Imperial and Federation, mostly because I figured it couldn't hurt to start working on some system permits, and also because I wanted to be able to buy each side's ships if I was so inclined. Very handy, since I bought an Imperial Clipper during the Imperial Wedding special deal thingy with the lowered rank requirements for purchase.
To paraphrase the word of another formerly independent Captain, "I ain't in it for your revolution, and I ain't in it for you. I expect to be well paid. I'm in it for the money."

Their incredible speed, large cargo capacity, and decent toughness makes them popular as pirate ships and smugglers. Me, I use mine primarily for mining, which I know would make any of the engineers or designers at Guatemaya cry in despair.

Just remember that you don't have to join a faction to reap the benefits of that faction.
I.e. some factions give bonuses to trading / bounty hunting etc. As long as you are doing you thing in their controlled systems you will get those bonuses too even if not aligned to that faction or any faction.
However, not being in a faction will exclude you from taking over systems, and earning merit for that factions special toys (like prismatic shields).
But not being in a faction makes you far less of a target.
Consider factions as end gameplay when you have plenty of surplus cash and you have no real need for continued mining/trading/exploration. Though of course you can do it at any time.

And undo it at anytime correct? You can "undo" or quit a faction any time you want, and there are two ways. Depending on your standing in a faction, i.e. the more merits you have the longer the waiting times for both option 1 and 2 Option 1) is to cancel your pledge to a faction. This holds no retribution but will incur a penalty time period before you can pledge to another faction. Length of time is dependant on how ranked you are in faction. Option 2) is to defect. You can defect at any time and instantly align with another faction. Defecting comes at a cost and you will be marked as a defector for both human and Ai ships for a period of time. Length of time is dependant on how ranked you are in faction. Cancelling your pledge or defecting will instantly loose all your standing in that faction but you keep the goodies you have bought when you had faction standing.

The little "local factions" you can't actually "join". But you can become friendly or even allied with them, I do it by completing bulletin board missions with high influence gains. And the controlling local faction of the station grows more friendly as I sell some of my mining proceeds.
The biggest gain of these better relations with local factions is access to the higher paying bulletin board missions. There are a couple of stations where I am allied with every local party, and the mission payouts have moved up into the $300k-$500k each range. Very profitable.

That's what I do Adlabs.Frequent 250k+ missions that if you stack up with others for the same system can be a good money-maker.
EV's are the Devils matchbox.
