Just found the photo collections of the San Diego Air & Space Museum Archive again.
The photos are mostly available in various sizes.
Right-click on a picture to get the formats. For full quality select "Original".
Enjoy!

Yes, good one - the poor horses in those days had never seen an aircraft, I guess.

Heard, too. Lots of problems at training facilities with engine noise scaring horses.

Olham,

Excellent pictures. I have often wondered why WWI German military aircraft changed from the Maltese cross to the Balkenkreuz "Beam Cross" which continued through WWII. Anyone know the history of Deutsch insignias? I have always thought that the old order Maltese knights cross looks sharp on post WWII and modern German military aircraft.

The German cross was shaped like the Maltese cross, and it originates from the same time;
the time of the Crusades, and the Knights Orders.
The German Order was the Deutschritter-Orden, or Deutscher Orden (Teutonic Order) - see here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teutonic_Knights

Why the shape of the cross was changed early 1918, I do not know. But the "straight" cross was
also used on the Coat of Arms of the Teutonic Order; so it was also a very old version.
