Any ideas? I've got the latest cat drivers. I have some problems in X-Plane, which apparently are known and being fixed (2D open-gl related). But Gunship, LB1/2, Flaming Cliffs, and F4AF are all functioning fine. Enemy Engaged has taken a dump on me. Help! Have the sim gods punished me for spending time with gunship and comanche in the last week?! "I repent, I repent!"

I've tried messing with all the graphics settings in the ini, including reloading the textures. Also tried reinstalling the last upgrade and letting the ini regen. Not helping.

Have you tried any older driver's? might be worth a try?

BTW how does the card perform in your other games?

Faster in Flaming Cliffs and Falcon. Smoother and all graphics enhancements can be turned on at the sim settings used with the 800xt that had many of them lower or off. Toss-up in Gunship!, but possibly better with AA/AF. Smooth as silk in Longbow Anthology and WWII Fighters. The LB sims seem to love this card with dgVoodoo. F-15/FA-18 are horrendously slow for some reason 1-10fps. Total Air War, Comanche Gold, and WWII Fighters have black bars around the sceen, which isn't from my Olevia. Obviously Comanche can't be affected by the card, but those other two are running faster otherwise. The organization of info on the CCC screens related to scaling is poor and convoluted, so I'm not sure if it's my setting or not. I've tried every scaling setting there. Oh, and X-Plane is acting up in a big way. At first it said there wasn't even an Open GL card installed. Now all the 2D textures are horrendously corrupted (big color confusion all over) and it's slower than the 800xt.

Anyone know which older drivers work with the AGP 3850?

You need cat 8.2 mate for either AGP or PCIe. thats what i had to do to get it running on my 3870X2 PCIe.

8.3/8.4 dont work and 8.5 breaks the cat control center. \:\(

If your on vista you'll need 7.11 as i found out when i tried to help out one of the guys in my squadron.

Hope that helps you.

8.5 is definitely the cause of the black borders. It seems to be a glitch in how it handles scaling. I don't see much difference between the CD and 8.5 beyond that. I did a new cleaning (using the new ATI uninstaller) and Total Air War is now fine with the CD drivers.

I also downloaded OpenGL Extension Viewer. The card passed only 1.1 and 2.1 tests perfectly. 1.5 and 2.0 tests had some jitter, and 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 were corrupted severely. 1.2 disappears after the first second.

So, I'm wondering what Enemy Engaged (somewhat older direct3D) and OpenGL v1.2 have in common that they both disappear like that. I'm also betting X-Plane 8.6 uses OGL 1.3 or 1.4.

I'm going to download Cat 8.2 and see what happens. I'll also reinstall EECH and see if that helps at all.

Reinstalling EECH did not fix...and that's a lot of stuff to install. For a moment there, I thought it was because I didn't use the 1.4.1C patch, so I just did again, too. But my disk is already 1.4.1C. And even starting the sim strait out from that still shows the same thing. No 3D graphics, just the HUD, the blue sky, and white. And the 3D models of the helos don't show up at the selection screen. Why did I think maybe it was because the patch wasn't installed? Because that's exactly the problem people used to have when they didn't! (finally a reason to use an exclaimation point that isn't for shouting! again!) So, doesn't that mean whatever originally caused that issue for people without the patch is affecting me with the 3850 AGP?

Anybody know what caused that no-3D-graphics glitch when people lacked the 1.4.1C patch? Maybe that could help me.

Yes. Which part are you refering to? It's not the 1.4.1C patch not being installed, since it worked before and on reinstall with the patch it still doesn't fix it. So do we know what was causing the 3D graphics not to show up when you didn't have the 1.4.1C patch? Maybe it's the same inherent issue somehow affecting me, even with the patch.

Reticuli did you get this resolved?

Just remembered this...all the catalyst drivers after 7.11 for AGP have had hot fixes released to deal with problems related to Direct 3d. i.e not rendering 3d/Stuttering issue's.

Dont know if this will help you but heres the link for the 8.2 Hot Fix http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=33033

I didn't. The card is not working for Open GL at all using three different drivers. And EECH didn't show any 3D graphics. It's similar to missing the patch or having one of the config files not configured properly (or regenerated), but neither was the case. Anyway, the card is being sent back tommarow for exchange or refund...not sure which. My 800xt AIW was a great card before the power pin broke on it. We'll see if eWiz can fix this situation for me. Right now an ATI 9250 256MB AGP oldie is in my 'puter.

Really?! No 3D graphics in EECH and Open GL is screwed up?

O.k., well this is getting somewhere finally. A number of people have already complained about 3850's support of OpenGL, so this must be entirely a driver issue. Both must be a massive driver issue.

Are you chaps aware of the problems with ATI's built in catalyst uninstaller? as in the bug where it does'nt fully un-install all the software.

Here's a blow by blow of how i got it working on radeon 3870x2 PCIe with win XP.(this also worked on a friends 3870 pcie crossfire setup)

You'll need catalyst 8.2 driver/WDM driver and Catalyst control centre, available on ATI's website under previous drivers. link - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

1.Download and install driver cleaner pro, its freeware. link - http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
2.Use the ATI software un-installer to remove all ATI software, DO NOT reboot when requested.
3.Run Driver cleaner, select clean with multiple filters, add ALL the ATI filters to the list then hit clean, hit close when complete.
4.Reboot.
5.Install in this order, catalyst 8.2 driver,8.2 WDM driver then 8.2 catalyst control centre. Dont reboot after each item wait till all of them are installed.
6.Reboot.
7.Select your AA/AF filters in CCC and run the game, you should now have 3D rendering.

Vista 32bit users with 3870 xt: same proceedure as above but use the older 7.11 driver, tested and working on squad mates system.

Sidenotes: I've noticed when i disable the catalyst AI it no longer renders anything but HUD and sky, leave this on standard, also using 4x Anti Aliasing with the box filter causes CTD in the Apache with Arnehs pit, using wide tent works a treat im using 6x at the mo with no problems.

Hopefully this proceedure will help some of you guys get EECH up and running.

I use driver cleaner pro exactly like that.

8.2 does not support the AGP version of the 3850.

Good news is, before you posted this I tried reinstalling the card. For some reason, this time Open GL finally works fine. X-Plane runs great. Fastest ever on my computer. I think this might have been helped with using the latest ATI uninstaller (the one on the 3850's CD) to clean the drivers of the 9250. I'm almost wondering if I need to buy another 800xt AIW, install it, and unstall it again for all the drivers to be cleaned. This is rediculous. Because EECH still has no 3D and now doing VPU resets. F-15 and F-18 are slow as poo. And even some Psygnosis game that can run in stereoscopic won't run at all, and that thing's never given me any problems ever. While Gunship! is incredibly fast when I crash (external view), it has noticeable slowdown on trees from the pit. I know the 800xt wasn't quite this good in external, but it didn't have more slowdown on trees. Maybe it's just more apparent because it's so smooth the rest of the time. Still, I guess I should have bought Nvidia...or just fly Lock On, F4AF, LBA, and TAW more. I have an RMA number, but I'm not sure it's worth it just to fly f15, f18, and EE. There's no Nvidia card anywhere near the 3850's performance in AGP, right? X-Plane is rock'n with it.

Wrong i'd say..check this card out HERE ..i've had it since it's release.OC's out of the box np's @ 700/580 and runs 24hrs a day rock solid.

I fly Lockon FC,EECH..play's ArmA,COD4 without any prob's..if you can get one where you are make sure it's the one i've listed because it's the 24 pipes version which is infact a down clocked 7900..hense why it OC's so well..

Oh and btw..install the older 93.71 drivers they work faster than the new drivers..trust me!

8.6 an improvement?

Damn, the Nvidias don't have hdcp support.

I'm bothered by the DVD playback on the 3850. The 800xt AIW looked better. Smoother, more detailed, almost HD. I'm sure this is fine for HD, or maybe that's the problem...that it was optimized for it.
