Baldur's Gate 3 at a canter.
But then, I hardly played any other 2023 releases which may be illustrative in it's own right.
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

Now that you bring it up, I've bought a few 2023 releases: Phantom Liberty (expansion for Cyberpunk), Company of Heroes 3, Aliens: Dark Descent and Formula 1 2023.

Only 2023 releases I have played:
Everspace 2 - badass System Shock remake - badass (but missing original music) Armored Core 6 - badass Baldur's Gate 3 - can't get drawn into the game yet. ADHD too great. Hard to sit still. Need more clicks per minute. Will keep trying, because the game is sooooooooo well done. Starfield - Meh. Such an unsurprising letdown. DCS: F-15 is pretty sweet but early access DCS: Apache with radar hellfire (no FCR yet) is amazing
So far Skyrim with 500+ mods wins game of the year.

BG is a classic. Starfield... just isn't. The only other game I am looking forward to this year is Cities Skylines 2.
Undercarriage lever a bit sticky was it, Sir?

I can't add anything. Not bought a game all year. In fact I don't think I bought one last year either. Plenty of free stuff but nothing I've played.

Baldur's gate 3 for me. A 'AAA' that was completely playable on release, with a full detailed story and minimal bugs. I finished it before patch 2 came out, and didn't come across any game breaking bugs. I'm sure there will be DLC coming out, but the game is complete as-is. Great stories, great graphics, interesting NPCs (although a bit too much of the 'everyone has to be super strange' for my tastes, what's wrong with relatively 'normal' NPCs?)
Starfield is fun, but lacks some sort of spark. I mean, I played it for 80 hours, but I might be shelving it until mods are out. Ship building is fun but frustrating with lack of options and all the junk being stored every time you think about changing something. The gunplay is pretty cool, but very spongy enemies get annoying. The level up system is pretty cool though.
I don't think I've played anything else that was released this year.

Yeah, I looked them up on Wikipedia when I first bought the game since I was not familiar with them (I've not played any of the Divinity games). Larian completely hit a home run with BG 3 and they deserve every accolade.

I can't remember buying a fresh game release this year so I don't have much of a personal opinion on it (but I guess BG3 will run away with it), but I know what it will be next year. MSFS 2024 That is the #1 on my list for next year. All the things Asobo has learned in the MSFS2020 process put in a new sim . Sounds fantastic, but will it float? I hope so.
