When night missions became possible in EAW Knegel thought it was unreasonable to locate an enemy aircraft by pressing "T" given that they were harder to see.
So he invented "night radar" for fairer play.
If you click "T" and the target aircraft is off-screen but within range then the little "X" appears somewhere on the edge of the screen as per usual.
If you use the little "X" to locate the plane then the night-radar box appears. It is a big red square and the targeted plane is in it.

First pass:

I nave hit a plane but the kill does not show in the kill-count as it is not yet down.

Second pass:

The kill shows in the kill-count, and I was in the thick of it with no more ammo smile

This is one of the least known features in EAW. I have modified the code and have made the UAW160 old map exe, the new map exe, and the multiplayer only exe (which I was using in the screenies).

With these exes night radar is used if you fly a night mission on-line or off wink
It works at any skill level. Previously it only worked if the skill setting was "ace".

wink Jel

This feature first appeared in EAW 128 in 2008.

A rather neat idea of Knegel's.

I made a change this morning.
F8 used to toggle the 2D cockpit display. It has not been used for a long time because the 2D 'pit only worked in 640x480.
Some time ago I made F8 the detail display toggle key.
If you target a plane and can see the type, the range and the little red box then hitting F8 will remove the type, the range and the little red box making it easier to aim at a certain part without the text in the way. Hitting F8 again will re-display the detail.

F8 will now toggle the display of night radar box too.
