On a related note, I read something interesting this morning...

Why is Rock dying/dead? Because teenagers aren't buying it. It's as simple as that. Teens decide what the hot musical genres are, just like in our day.

The day I became a teenager in 1980, every kid in the neighborhood who owned a guitar wanted to be the next Eddie VH, and the one with a drum set (probably from the Sears Wishbook catalog) wanted to be the next Neil Peart.

I assume the musical idols for today's teens are all rappers.

Exactly right and it's not just rock. Other genres like Big Band and Doo-Wop died from the mainstream for the same reason.

You know which genre fascinates me? Country. The "Country Music" genre label is still used but is the Country music of today in any way similar to the Country music from the 80's and earlier? I would argue "no way".

I remember in the early-mid 90's, Alan Jackson's "Chattahoochee" and Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" were *huge* hits! Like with Rock, Country was heading in a direction I wasn't interested in.

But hey, I still had my Willie, Merle, George, Cash, and especially Alabama collections so I didn't care. Only "modern" Country I enjoy today are a few Brad Paisley songs, all with one thing in common...no vocals.

I agree with this. For those of us (probably most of us) who grew up in a strict conservative household (well before the internet and cell phones), new tech like cable TV and MTV were a fun and sometimes sleazy escape from our everyday environment. These larger-than-life virtuostic 'hair bands' with videos about hot teachers and strippers had a pretty big WOW factor for any teen males who's only porn might have been an occasional peak at a friend's father's hidden Playboy collection. Also on those 3 or 4 rabbit-eared network television stations, sex would be subtly implied and you never heard foul language on TV or on the radio. What I loved most about the 80's, other than discovering all the new tech, was the balance.

Yes I largely agree with that YT comment. Let's face it, there's very like shock value with modern day society. Pretty much anything with sex, drugs, violence, etc. has been over-exposed to such a high degree that I think society in general has just become largely desensitized to it. So how can a genre like ROCK which was originally all about rebellion and going against the norms of society still be relevant today?
