Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 03/07/17 06:30 PM

So he becomes the second UK actor to become a Star Trek captain on tv. I think he'll be great.

I think he's a good actor, so in a way I'm a little disappointed that he got this role because what I've heard of the show doesn't sound that great to me, and CBS making it only available through their subscription service I think will doom it. I think he will be good in it, though.

Well The Dig got cancelled, although he was an American there.

He'll always be Malfoy to me, though.
"Captain Malfoy, the Dark Lord is hailing."

It's Capt Steele from BHD!
Great choice IMO. Especially after how disappointing Bakula was.

I thought Bacula was great, but then I thought "Enterprise" was great in general.

Hey captain, remember when you got your Latin mixed up and skinned alive by the Spock?

Enterprise started off weak but it certainly improved in seasons 3 and 4.

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 03/08/17 02:03 PM

Star Trek has always been about ensembles, and frankly Enterprise had a letdown for a supporting cast. Connor Trinneer was good and really...that was it. The rest was more or less forgettable. T'Pol and Reed had moments, but only moments.

While a good captain is the foundation of the series, the rest of the cast is the walls. The ship is the roof. smile

Or in the case of Babylon 5 and DS9, the station is the roof!

Yes, you might generalize it as "location".

I loved it too, beginning to end. Part of it is that Archer was the pioneer and not supposed to know what to do in all situations. No Prime Directive, not Federation...they were writing the book as they went.
However, part was also Bakula, although likable, can be pretty bland. Sometimes he seemed to be doing a Kirk impression..with his...halting...cadence.
Or maybe Connor Trinneer doing such a bang up job as Trip just showed him up unintentionally?

This was also my observation when I watched the first season of Enterprise.

Bakula is a good actor but he was in my opinion just missing that intangible "screen presence" or gravitas if you will on the show. It's something that you really can't teach an actor and it's something that you can't predict until you watch the final product.

Not all actors can pull off authority.

Nor can all actual leaders.

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 03/08/17 09:51 PM

I would rate the primary actors of "Enterprise", on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being excellent, as follows:

Scott Bakula - 8

Connor Trinneer - 9

John Billingsley - 9

Jolene Blalock - 7

Dominic Keating - 7

Anthony Montgomery - 5

Linda Park - 5

In the case of the last 3 some of that maybe can be put down to writing, these three just didn't have a lot of good episodes centered on their characters.

But in B5 the roof is the floor and the floor the roof... madness that way lies!

Something tells me that this guy won't be anywhere NEAR as good as Roger Carmel.

He was pretty good in Super. I'm not worried smile

Rainn Wilson has been great in everything I've seen him in. However, he's obviously going to have to play it differently.

Just announced they're changing Sonequa Martin-Green's character name to "Michael" Burnham.

Ridiculous.

I've seen a few women named Michael over the years, like Michael Learned from The Waltons. It occurred to me their parents wanted a boy.

True but taken with everything else I've heard about this series it seems to me to just be another little bit of PC being injected into the show.

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 04/05/17 03:06 PM

We had a female Governor General named Michaelle Jean. It is a French name and pronounced "Mikhail" but she was definitely female. So maybe the character is not American and pronounces their name differently, can't really rely on the spelling on a blog as it could be mis-spelled. Otherwise I don't know what they are doing other than strangling the series in it's crib.

They did that when they made it online exclusive. The rest are just nails in the coffin.

Bingo.

Screw 'em.

Oh, and the real kicker for me is that it will be on Netflix everywhere, except the US.

Yep. Screw. Them.

This they have. I'm not going to watch it and decided that a year ago when their lead writer/producer went on a rant about how he's going out of his way to piss off any and everyone with any shred of moral value left in them, and cram progressive politics down their throat. Well, we now know gender identity crap is on the table.

Science fiction should be groundbreaking, but there's a time and a place for it and purposefully pissing on half the viewing market is not a good idea.

We should start taking bets now on how long this show will last.

My prediction: One season and done.

Oh ye of little faith.

I'll pull up this thread when the show gets renewed for the third season and point and laugh smile

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 04/06/17 08:22 PM

I'm willing to give it a chance.

I lurked lately on a few ST forums, and the discussion seem to indicate a high curiosity and about 60% interest in watching it. There is definitively a public for this out there.

I would not worry about ratings. Battlestar Galactica had poor ratings, but it was a good show. The Expanse does not have the best audience numbers either, maybe for a Sy-fi show, but not overall for a TV show, and it is a great show too.

ST fans say they want something new, but they really do not mean it when they say that. They just want an updated TNG.

I for one, I am glad this will veer away from the "monster" or "spatial anomaly" of the week show, with 5 filler Troy episodes per season.

This will find its way to more popular streaming sites in the US. Maybe not before the end of the first season, but CBS will definitively will "syndicate" it to either Netflix or Amazon.

At the worse, maybe it will have a good first season, and then turn into "The Walking Space Dead".

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 04/06/17 10:01 PM

I'll be watching it for sure. Our Fire TV has the CBS app, so I'll be watching it normally on a tv.
It might not be perfect, but I'm not going to refuse to support a Star Trek return to tv (in some form) and shoot the genre in the foot. It's worth at least giving it a chance.

That is only partially true. The first 2 seasons of BSG had absolutely great ratings for SciFi Channel and those numbers would have been darn good for any cable network at the time. The first season was averaging between 2.5-3.0 million viewers per episode.

The ratings took a significant dive in season 3 and bottomed out near the end of that season but then stabilized for the duration of season 4.

I thought this video had some good info, and I like that they stress the rumor info is just that - rumor - but the rumors line up very well with the factual information that's been released.

Re: Star Trek Discovery has its captain - 04/10/17 02:50 PM

I hadn't heard all those rumors, only some, but the picture being painted is definitely of a ship being beached by its captain, or in this case CEO.
