So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 04:23 PM

Until I finally get to play Cliffs of Dover!

I'm hoping the game will be in a somewhat more polished state since I've heard a few patches have already been released for it.

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 04:50 PM

I'm looking forward to it, mostly because my expectations have always been somewhat grounded.

This is what I'm expecting:

Graphics: Gorgeous! Can't wait until I upgrade in five years to put everything to max with decent frame rates.
FM/DM: Incredibly detailed and eye poppingly good. Except where it isn't - then it's laughably wrong.
Campaign: What part of 1C: Maddox do you not understand?
Mission builder: Intuitive, detailed, easy to use. And you will use it. See Campaign.
AI: See FM/DM

LOL Dart.

Well, I consider myself a pretty patient gamer. If I managed to stick around with WWII Online after its disasterous debut until it was patched to an acceptable level of playability, I can do put up with anything else. smile

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 04:58 PM

I too eagerly await the U.S. release... I've had it preordered from Amazon since March! I've been willing to wait, well mainly because of all of the negative press I've read in regards to the state at release. I too remember the WW2 Online debut, I was in the Beta and let me tell you I was SHOCKED they released it to the public in the state that they did.

Don't listen whiners. The game is absolutely fantastic in its current state. The best looking game I have ever seen. The lack of content, planes if more precisely, is only serious drawback. All those bugs people grumble about are so minor you would hardly notice them until someone point them to you.

I'm not too worried about that since it will take a me a good while to become proficient with the planes that are currently in the game and I'm sure we'll have expansions later on for other theatres like the Pacific, North Africa, Eastern Front, etc.

PM, once you are in the air and flying you will immediately feel at home because of your experience in IL-2 1946. There are differences of course, but I predict that proficiency in handling and gunnery will come a little easier to you than you might expect. As for advanced engine management, I couldn't say because like in IL-2 1946 I don't bother with it.

Oh, as far as I can tell, you have to open the canopy before trying to bail.

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 05:48 PM

Oh, speaking of patience - as long as the developers keep at it I am okay. When devs prematurely abandon the product and leave it to the mod community, I might lose patience.

I have had the game for a while and it has improved over three small patches, I have heard that another one may be released today, we'll see. I ordered mine through Just Flight and downloaded through Steam after fudging my address to the UK (lol) It took a while for me to create a workable stick profile which is still a WIP so plan on learning to fly again it's worth it.

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 07:00 PM

I have notched up just over 140 hours in game, almost exclusively in Spits and Hurris, full CEM, still great fun even though I know that the FM needs some work.

Despite the problems (you might have caught a few of the subtle hints at them on some of the forums ;)) it is a great sim with huge potential, especially given it's amazing attention to detail.

Dart's expectations are about bang on apart from the AI, it's better when it's good and utterly astoundingly bad when it isn't skyisfalling

Thursday was my 'flight night'. I turned the computer on,set up my Fighterstck, pedals, throttle and TiR.Plugged the headphones in.Hovered the mouse icon over the CoD shortcut for a few seconds.
Thought 'meh' and put everything away again, went down and watched tv instead. This is a slight contrast to il2 that at one point I was playing up to 40 hours a week regularly.
Don't panic about any delays, the longer it takes hopefully the better it will get.

Did Luthier not state that the sound code has been fixed in the last update(meet the team), it is the sounds themselves that have not been finished i.e recording a sound to match every event. Hopefully there is a sound studio somewhere in Moscow that has been getting loads of overtime in over the last month or so to get them ready for Tuesday.
Wishful thinking? I hope not!

"We are redoing our sound from scratch. It is proceeding at a better pace than expected. Itís already in a working alpha state, and everyone loves it. The only thing that makes it an alpha is that a lot of events do not play sounds yet. 95% of the remaining work is simply adding new samples." From the July 1st update.

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/15/11 07:38 PM

From where I'm sitting, as it stands, it's pretty good (don't play MP). It is absolutely incredibly brilliant where it gets things right, but it is far from getting everything right. I'd say they are about one large, or maybe two smaller, patches away from what would have been an *acceptable* 1.0 release.

Yeah, I'm working on a stick profile, too. One thing I don't like about CoD is that when you give your own key command for one of those blank in-game commands, it doesn't warn you if you entered an already-used command.

I do hope for another major patch before the US release, because for the time being I've pretty much given up CoD.

The devs so far have managed to improve the performance considerably, if they manage to fix/improve the major issues I still have with the game it can still become a classic, despite its botched release.

wave2

I'll need it for about a week before I write up the review, then probably another in review and edit. I'm sure everyone will disagree with it, since I haven't "taken a side" other than the side that is entirely fed up with the taking of sides.

It's not the root code of the Internet or firmware to the life support machines in an ICU, it's a flight sim. Should be some good, some bad, some fantastic and some outright terrible.

At worst it'll be a waste of forty bucks, which will most definately not be a low point in my life. The day that how good or bad a flight sim plays brings forth a lasting emotional response is the day I start flailing my hands about in a desperate attempt to find the handle of perspective.

Hopefully it'll show its colors early on and not turn stinker halfway through like Crysis.

There will also be some other articles about the sim by other staff members to get different viewpoints and look at it from different angles.

So long as the game does not have an engaging career mode, it's a no sale for me. It can have the greatest visuals and damage model in the world, but if the SP mode does not have strong replay value, then it's not worth my time.

Thank the invisible pink unicorn that the only immersion I need is from the cockpit.

But strong replay value I agree with. That's why I go for the most dynamic and ever changing style of play there is, playing against humans. The replay value changes every single second of every time you fly.

This.

I really want to have a WWII game to play, but don't have the money or the time to devote to something that is not going to engage for more than a couple of missions.

Streets better, miles better, convincing. Convincing's half the battle for immersion

Rise of Flight took the chance to develop the sim into a work of art under their own very satisfyingly-naturalistic Digital Nature engine, CoD developers stuck with the Il-2 engine when they had promised us a fresh look at the Battle of Britain world. CoD developers called their sim Cliffs of Dover, that was a major blunder and it should have been called '[Someone's perhaps] Battle of Britain'.

There's no resonance in 'The Pebbles of Brighton' not 'Brighton Rock' for example, titles are half the battle. Even if we're not quite sure why Smile2

Oops Smile2

Quote:
Gennadich Team started mod of IL-2, related to WWI. However IL2 engine was limited in some subsystems and it was impossible to implement all needed features

Primary needed feature seems to have been 'immersive'... and thank goodness. Look at those airfields. Aerodromes. They've even got cooler names Smile2

Bliss, we've been around this block plenty enough. But, once again:

Not everyone has the time or inclination for multiplayer, and in my case, that's largely due to the times I play (very late at night, Pacific Time).

CoD can look stunningly beautiful under certain lighting conditions (dawn with mists hanging around the fields is my favourite), but it IMO suffers badly from the popping-up of ground objects, the blurry textures in the distance and (IMHO) a rather garish colour palette.

RoF doesn't offer quite the ground detail CoD does but IMO it looks more natural, and I especially love the change in colours as you climb higher.

Much the same here. I have now bought FSX, A2A Spitfire, REX,UTX & GEX. I don't fret COD anymore. At present there is not enough substance to it to keep my interest and it's future glory is little more than a pipe dream. It isn't worth arguing about.

I tried RoF and from what I saw I can say CloD is in a totally new generation visually.

As for colors I am using i1dysplay2 colorimeter device and perfectly 100% sRGB gamut ips monitor or also color calibrated flat TV screen. Colors are absolutely realistic in CloD while in RoF they most of a time are considerably desaturated probably to match with typically oversaturated modern consumer monitors. It kills a sense of proper lighting and the ground surface always looks like a cloudy day there. So I am pretty happy with the colors in CloD. They dare to show you plain realistic non-processed colors for something in the end of a summer unlike many modern games and movies being color-graded to death nowadays. And when it comes to sunsets/dawn there is just no comparison not only with RoF but any other game I saw.

Hmm. From most screen shots I've seen, CloD's graphics (except over water) don't really remind me much of looking outside a real airplane cockpit (except maybe during taxi and parking); RoF's do. Granted, I'm not sure how much of that is from the game itself, and how much is from people not being able to run CloD at max settings for their screenshots. At times, though, some of the later IL-2 maps looked more convincing than what I've seen in CloD screenshots so far.

I know very well what you can see on your monitor. It's nothing new. Color grading is a part of my job and I have to cope with that color problem every day. I just feel a bit tired of that silly task of processing colors to make them pleasing for a Joe who buys most amazingly oversaturated screens with some cool tropical fishes and then grumbles about why everything so garish. And I love the fact that somebody is still trying to make a product that looks perfectly natural and good on a professionally calibrated equipment, not something of two colors, basically indigo and brown like a half of modern games and movies.

+1

I got taken to task on this basically for inferring that the average gamer is "at fault" because they hadn't calibrated their screens to, say, an RBG standard. That was hardly my point, of course, but I had noted how garish some of the midday landscapes in CoD looked when I hadn't hit my calibration preset. By the same token, if the developers had opted to set their palettes to accommodate most commercially available monitors (as mine are - just run of the mill Samsungs), the landscapes would no doubt look washed out on my screens.

I don't colour grade for a living, but I'm an avid video enthusiast and I do all my post, including colour grading, in Adobe's Production Premium CS5.5 Suite (Premiere Pro and After Effects). I'm also acutely aware of the colour grading that IMHO is far too overdone in most movies and gets to be annoying/distracting. ROF and DCS-A10C have impressed me with their natural tones that are actually quite subdued. I like the colour range and saturation in CoD as it appears on my monitors, but it would be a good feature in C0D's video setup to enable the player to use a sliding scale to adjust saturation within the game to a degree.

I haven't heard anything about an imminent mega patch, but one can only hope. The biggest problem for me personally is the lack of a battle of britain game, the campaign is a complete joke.

I must say that I am quite content with strafing stuff that goes boooom (in the most striking way), never seen anything more spectacular in a simulation ever. Put some machinegun fire into a fuel truck and watch the fireworks!

Robin Williams as an old Scotsman describing the game of golf: "They put a flag on the distant green to give us f'ing hope!" So it goes with CoD, some fantastic graphics just to give us some f'ing hope! LOL

The Campaign sucks. Some of the missions are fine, but there's no connect between the debrief and what actually happened. Flying a captured Bf110 (with Luftwaffe markings, no less) to another airfield, young ladies sharing a Spit cockpit, renegade pilots......ooops, hope I didn't spoil it for anyone! I was kinda hoping for something closer to BOB2's, but that was a stretch!

Agree. Saturation and gamma sliders should be a must nowadays and it's their serious omission imo. Correct gamma is the same rarity by the way. Moreover with an increasing availability of non-standard wide gamut monitors recently which have no chance to show correct colors in games it's getting even harder to get nice colors for everyone.

Hi Kilosierra, I've had the sim for a couple of days now. It actually runs very well. I only get an occasional stutter when new planes spawn or when London loads into my graphics card. biggrin This is with CoD's default settings; I haven't cranked any of them up yet, but it sure looks good already! I will try out overclocking it in the near future after I sort out my HOTAS profile.

PS. I wrote in the hardware forum that I solved my CPU temperature problem. It wasn't incorrect heatsink installation as I had feared, it's just my cramped little case. For now I am running it with the side cover off until I get another case when I can afford it. CPU idles at 35 degrees. After running CoD for about an hour it goes to the mid-40s. Not too bad. smile

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/16/11 11:15 PM

KiloSierra - Update: I overclocked the CPU to 4.3 and CoD ran even smoother than before. I have no scientific numbers to post, but it was stable with no stutters.

Re: So....4 days and counting - 07/16/11 11:33 PM

Oki,

I`ve played with the options and it seems shadows off has the most impact. Most other setting are high. Still not smooth though, but definatly playable. The shadows were flickering anyway, so it isn`t such a loss.

Edit: what resolution are you running the sim at? I have 1980*1080. What`s your OS?

As for the case, I have the CoolerMaster Centurion 5 II. Nothing special, but good bang for the buck (55 Ä). Has one 12 cm and one 14 cm fan already installed.

I'll have some of the medication you are on please.

COD really, really needs finer-grained graphics detail settings. For instance, I would love to turn off the tree shadows because I think their incessant flickering is actually a detriment to the graphics quality, and I suspect this would give a nice boost in framerate by itself, but I want to keep all the other shadows (particularly the cockpit shadows, as those are rather nice). It's frustrating.

Oh, and a slider to adjust the force feedback in-game for the love of god.

WinkNGrin I love the look of the water in the English Channel in the game don't you? And I hear they are working to make it look

even better.

The first step towards getting the help you need is admitting you have a problem.

It's still set to come out on the 19th but that may not mean anything. With less than a day to go last time they pushed the release back approximately two months. Until it is released on the 19th I am going to be skeptical about it actually happening considering the last two delays happened at practically the last minute without any notice.

Hopefully my skepticism is complety off the mark and it is released on the 19th.

Who knows what will happen on the 19th. If it does actually come out, I'm sure we can expect a new wave of "activity" on the forums. Whether it is the good sort or not depends on what Maddox Games has exactly been doing during their quiet time.
