Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases

Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 09/28/22 12:07 PM

1. The joystick buttons do not work

Solution for both GoG and Steam: find the "dinput.dll" file in the EAW folder, and either delete it or re-name it.

2. What is the OAW expansion for the GoG version and where do I get it?

It is a patch that installs the OAW file-manager into s copy of the GoG EAW folder.
This allows the user to select different theatres, terrains, gunsights and horizons

The patch can be used if you have either a GoG version of EAW 1.28 or the EAW 1.2 which replaced it recently.
It updates the GoG installation to their 1.28 version and adds two special versions of the OAW selector.

Use the following link to download the installer.

GoG expansion with OAW

Make a copy of your GoG EAW folder and run the "OAW-GoG128Apr5.exe" in the copy.
Allow it to overwrite files.

Steam users can make a copy of their Steam EAW folder and run the "OAW-GoG128Apr5.exe" in the copy.

If you run the "OAW2021Basic.exe" you should see this:

[Linked Image]

There are 17 theatres to select from, and that is the main point of the exercise smile

If the "OAW2021Basic.exe" crashes when you try to run it it will be because the runtime files are missing.
If that happens then there is a folder named "OAW runtime set-up" which was added to the GoG EAW folder when you ran the "OAW-GoG128Apr5.exe".
In that folder there is a "setup.exe" file.
Running it will allow you to install the runtime files and solve the problem smile

The "OAW2021Full.exe" is a more complex version that allows you to make additional selections. You can still use it to load theatres, but you can also use it to select other things, such as gunsights.

*********************************************************************************************************************************

3. What is the difference beween the GoG and Steam versions of EAW1.2 ?
AFAIK there is none. The Steam version has the same exe, dll and other files. It is the GoG version re-packaged for Steam. Some people have wasted $$ by buying both.

4. Will GoG or Steam fix problems such as crashes with careers and the difficulties with the mouse on the single mission parameters screen?

I think that this is very unlikely. From what we have learned Atari lost the EAW source code, I doubt that GoG or Steam have it.
There are other versions which run on Windows 7 and 10 and do not have these problems.
They do not have the stuff that GoG added to increase the frame rate, but I have no frame-rate problems running them in Windows 7 with the d3d windower, or in Windows 10 in Glide mode.

This screenie is from running one of them in Windows 7 in d3d but with no d3d windower.
The eaw resolution was 1680x1050 and you can see the frame-rate of 57 fps.

Great set of theatres and scenarios Jel. Nice to see some of mine there. Tribute to the work of many members of the EAW community over the years who provided planes, objects, terrain tiles, skies, screens, data files various, and Lord knows what else.

cheers

to all of them!

Just letting people know that this thread is a "sticky". I have just added more information to the first post, and I will continue to do so when issues with the GoG/Steam releases emerge

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 12/27/22 01:17 PM

Questions:
Why I cannot use the joystick? I deleted the Dinput.dll, but still cannot get the stick to work.
I see I can select other scenarios, but those do not change the terrain sets?

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 12/29/22 04:49 AM

What joystick are you using? Does the game recognize the buttons at all? Does the joystick work with any other versions of EAW?

Jel might come along and help with the scenarios question.

I own a Saitek X52, and no, it does not work, not a single button.
It worked with other modded versions of EAW.

Simply wanted to reload a complete version of EAW.

Which versions of EAW did it work with?

This is an extract from the UAW160 "eaw.ini" file

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/02/23 10:43 AM

"I own a Saitek X52, and no, it does not work, not a single button.
It worked with other modded versions of EAW."

I asked this question to help me figure out what is happening: "Which versions of EAW did it work with?", but you did not answer it.
Do you still have those versions?

I suspect that the 1.2/GoG/Steam version cannot handle the Saitek X52 because the "eaw.ini" file does not refer to devices.

Have you checked your "eaw.ini" file- does it reference joystck buttons?

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/03/23 07:52 PM

I cannot remember which version I played, it was long ago.

And no, the stick button do not appear on EAW.ini. Maybe I should try another version of the game.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/04/23 12:31 AM

Are you able to play the game and fly even if the buttons do not work, If so what is working (such as ailerons)?

If things are working it may be a matter of editing the "eaw.ini" file to get more working. However, it bothers me that your throttle is a separate controller.

EDIT:
This is a link to a 1.28e standalone installation:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/130EbPE-fBrgmD0PqL6hK0P9JKH-D6qr3/view?usp=share_link

Running the downloaded "1.28eBARE.exe" will create a "1.28e bare" folder.
The "eaw.ini" file in it is mine for the Logitech Extreme 3D PRO joystick.

1.28e can handle two devices unlike the GoG/Steam versions of 1.2 and the FXExe so it may be worth a try.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/06/23 02:42 PM

Bare. exe runs good with joystick and joystiuck buttons working, crappy FPS but good controls. I have connected the rudder pedals as well, so maybe that's the issue?

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/06/23 03:36 PM

Are you using Win 10?
Posted By: MrJelly

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/06/23 04:03 PM

On my PC I have the game folders on internal drives. The operating system is on an HDD which I slide into a slot at the front of the PC.
So I can run any version of EAW either in Win 10 or Win 7.
Win 7 is faster than Win 10. I can get 60 FPS in D3D if I run Win 7 whereas in Win 10 I am lucky to get 24 FPS.
In Win 10 the trick is to use glide. Glide needs the "eaw.ini" to be set at 1024x768, but you can set the glide screen size to whatever suits.
I just tried it in "1.28e bare" and was getting 60 FPS in Glide running in Win 10.

What happens if you use your "eaw.ini" from "1.28e bare" in your GoG EAW folder?
Some settings will not apply; but maybe some buttons may work.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/11/23 09:15 PM

I don't really need the GOG version, will really love to try a "modern" EAW working out of the box on my Win10 machine, specially If it came with new planes/skins and terrains.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/14/23 09:11 AM

In that case you need to download and install a test version to make sure that it runs on your system.
There is a thread here:

https://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4609167/a-new-test-version-of-uaw160#Post4609167

Once it is running you can install a full version.

As you are using Win 10 you will need to set the "eaw.ini" file to 1024x768 and run in glide.
I just tested the download and was getting 60 FPS in Glide.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/15/23 09:51 AM

That version works beautifully, but I cannot select Glide mode in options screen, and I get a garbled debriefing screen after a mission. The stick and buttons work perfectly! We're on the right path!

I can get Glide running that program in Win 10. I have the "nglide_config.exe" that came with the GoG version.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/15/23 12:10 PM

I am building a download of the UAW160 folder that I use online. It is fine for offline play too.
The folder itself is just under 6 gigabytes in size. There are 27 planesets available and 21 theatres.

I will post a link when it is ready but it will take a couple of hours to compress and upload.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/15/23 01:53 PM

Here is the link:

UAW10thDec2021MP folder installer

Running the downloaded "UAW10thDec2021MP.exe" creates a "UAW10thDec2021MP" folder.

The key file to use is the "DSP.exe"

[Linked Image]

You can select an exe (but not the one I did which is for multiplayer only), a theatre and a planeset.

Let me know if you get a run-time error when you try to run the "DSP.exe"
Then you can try to set-up and fly a single mission.

Years ago Knegel made some planesets using the default weapons files. Additional weapons were added in UAW150.
Ray added more, but for some reason he modified some of the original ones.
The upshot was that I created UAW160 which used Ray's new weapons files.
In order to use some older planesets the UAW150 files need to be loaded, and if you switch back to UAW160 they need to be unloaded.

There are a number of utilities in the folder, several relate to multiplayer games, and there is one which allows the user to edit planesets or even build new ones.
You can change tracer colours and select a gunsight too.

In case you are not aware there was a breakthrough in UAW1.29 that allowed the tile-map to be something other than 640x320. As a result a new map system had to be invented.
That is why there are two versions of the eaw.exe. The "old map" version requires the 640x320 tile map and uses the "Europe1.pic" pilot map.
The "new map" version reads a "TileSet.mpf" file that contains the sizes. Then it reads the "targetmap.pic" file. It must be used if the tile-map is not 640x320.
Roy's New lake tile-map is 114x62

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/15/23 04:26 PM

I can do everything ok but launch the game, once I try to launch the mission, the game CTD. Any ideA?
Posted By: MrJelly

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/15/23 05:01 PM

Open the "Default Theatre" folder in the "UAW10thDec2021MP"
Open the "Gamedata" folder and delete all of the slot folders.

Run the DSP and select the old map exe, the Default European Theatre, and the EAW default planeset.
Load the 150 weapons.

Launch the game, and set-up a single mission in a Spit IXc.
Fly the mission.
If something goes wrong let me know what happened wink

Rationale:
The details of the last mission flown are saved in a slot folder in the "GameData" sub-folder in each theatre folder.
If you change the the planeset the selected planes may not match the previous ones. For example if the mission is an intercept the enemy primary plane should be a bomber.
If the plane in that slot in the new planeset is a fighter there can be a problem.

Edit:
There is something else that may need to be done.
There is a file that sets the maximum numbers of planes. It is named "SINGLEmax.mpf". It is a text file which opens with notepad.
The four values are 72. Reduce them to 12 and save the file.

Just taking a break from GameRanger. We flew two missions using the "UAW10thDec2021MP" folder with no problem.
There is a build up of the "simple" folder which I will give you tomorrow.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 01/17/23 09:15 AM

Maybe re-set nGlide with the eaw.ini at 1024x768 wink

Other than for nostalgia I cannot see why people spend money of the GoG or Steam versions given the alternatives that run well in Windows 10 and are freely available wink

I'd say GoG, and probably Steam too, are not getting rich from offering EAW. I think those who bought it generally had too many technical issues trying to play it. People want stuff quick and easy these days.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/22/23 12:24 PM

Hi i'm kinda new to EAW (i used to play the vanilla game many years ago), now i got the GOG version and i found your 1.28 OAW very useful since it seems to patch the problems i encountered in pilot career (mainly ctd). I saw however that your expansions have some interesting theatres but they are all in the "non career complete sets" section. Since pilot career is my favourite mode i'm curious to know if any of them support pilot career (for example, the dunkirk theatre seems to not work well in career, but Great Shot II does) and if they are the same campaigns available in Tally-Ho or they are different in the sense that they contain (or are intended for) only the online set. In short, i'm a newbie and i find myself a bit overwhelmed by the many versions and add-ons available and i'm trying to make sense of how all of them work. Aside from that i'm very glad that EAW has still such a talented community of modders that make this awesome game even more awesome.
Posted By: MrJelly

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/22/23 02:00 PM

The OAW set-up is designed to allow you to play different theatres. Many new theatres have been created by modders since EAW was released.
However, very few of these theatres had a career structure. Dunkirk is a theatre that hardly requires a career set-up as it has a very short time-line.

The original version of Dunkirk had a sequence of saved single missions for all the aircraft involved. These moved through the ten days of the evacuation as the perimeter frontline shrunk.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/23/23 12:08 PM

SPAW has two fully functional career possibilities with historically accurate American and Japanese squadrons, both army and naval air forces.

1 - Guadalcanal, 1942/43
2 - South Pacific / New Guinea, 1943/44.

OTOH, while ETO2015 uses the standard EAW career files, it has a much improved set of targets, including dams and other historically accurate items that were not included in the original game.
Posted By: MrJelly

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/23/23 12:58 PM

SPAW was originally written for 1.28c. The author of the post is using the GoG 1.28 version with OAW.
Otherwise I would have mentioned it in my first response wink

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/23/23 01:43 PM

Yes that's true and I wouldn't have said anything except the OP seems to be open to trying other versions.

If a variety of careers is his main interest then the only option( as far as I know) other than the default EAW careers is SPAW.

One caveat for Bruce.

When produced SPAW had a set of planes that were historically correct and at certain points the player would get transferred to different planes, usually with better performance, such as switching from the F4F to the F4u's late in the Guadalcanal theater.(historically accurate)

With the latest exec (1.6) players have the ability to put in whatever planes they choose, in any theater they desire. While this is a great option, it is possible to screw up the historically accurate planes.

Not a big deal but something a career aficionado should be cognizant of.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/23/23 02:18 PM

Yes, my main interest is generally offline playing, careers are my favourite but i like single missions also. The problem is that i can't find SPAW, i usually look in Tally-Ho but i can't find it there (there are, for the pacific theatre, some New Guinea campaings, Pacific Tide and Midway), and more in general every campaign i found is a huge pain to install (dozens and dozens of tiny files, many of them require DOS file managers that even with DosBox seem to have problems working). I've read about some campaign managers and .batch organizers (like ECA Control Panel) but every link i found doesn't work anymore and again, i can't find none of them in Tally-ho or EAWHS.

Some of the careers in this 128 GOG version though seem to work or at least function with minor bugs, like SpanishAirWar, BattleOfBritain and DesertAirWar, if there are minor historical inaccuracies i honestly don't mind much. I would be interested in trying to install the Poland Campaign, the AITW 1940 and Operation Torch ones for example, but as i said earlier i am in the search of some non-excruciating process since i have limited time to dedicate to this game and\or i'm a noob and i don't know what i'm doing.

I tried a bit the 1.60 version but it's clearly built for online playing, and even if somehow you can install campaigns\careers and make them run with both the 1.28 and 1.60 selectors, i don't know how to do it.

Thanks all of you for the info by the way

Fake news. 1.6 is perfectly capable of running off line. In fact, with it's ability to switch plane sets with a couple of mouse clicks it's really a lot of fun. Plus there are a fantastic number of improvements, from aircraft carriers, to dam busting, to skip bombing, to a massive increase in targetable object and many, many more that are only available in this line.

That said, 1.6 seems to be daunting to install but it isn't as bad as some people assume. And Mr. Jelly, our one and only programmer, is EXTREMELY helpful getting folks up and running.

Bruce, there's something to remember for future posts.

There is a great divide in the EAW community with the two sides unable to overcome years and years of bad blood. Shame really because there's a lot of talent on both sides of the divide. So if you decide that 1.6 is the way you want to go, post questions and comments in the subforum at the top of the page. We can continue the conversation in there.

I am considering making a 160 installation for careers with theatres that have associated career files, and the appropriate planesets.
Posted By: MrJelly

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/24/23 08:38 AM

I changed my mind smile

AFAIK no theatres with careers were written after 1.28c
So I have built an updated 1.28c package with several theatres and corresponding plane-sets.
If a theatre has an associated career then it is indicated.

I will post a link when the file is uploaded.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/24/23 10:33 AM

Ok, i clearly need to learn more about how exactly the 1.60 version works, i tried the UAW160 2020 version and it didn't seem to have that many more single player theatres than the 1.28 one, both made by MrJelly (i probably can't thank him enough) but now i see that the 1.60 has in fact SPAW in it, so you're right. I found also (finally) a decent download list from EAWHS so that is solved. I still have to learn to install campaign files in the correct way so that i can manage them with MrJelly's selectors and don't run into trouble running the game, but if i will need more info about 1.60 i will post in that forum and not here. Thanks

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 03/24/23 12:56 PM

Bruce:
I checked the " UAW160 2020 Downloads" thread and in the fist post there is a line which reads "The full download of my UAW160 folder:"
It is followed by links that allow you to build a full installation.

It leads to this picture which gives you an idea of the full installation:

[Linked Image]

There are 25 theatres and a heap of planesets.

The whole point of UAW160 is the separation of theatres from planes.
If you want to fly Pacific planes in a European theatre then UAW160 will let you do it.
It also lets you load a theatre and a plane-set with planes that belong to that theatre.

What is not in that installation is the original SPAW theatre which was superseded by "SPAW2019FinalCut".
I could add it if need be, but it is better to use the 1.28c version for career missions.

The multiplayer theatres can be used for offline fun too.
They are versions of the original with bases moved to different places, and a new front-line.
This was done because in multiplayer there is no time acceleration.
Their creation allows bases to be selected for enjoyable ground-started games in real time
An allied interception from HMS Victorious of planes coming to attack it from a Japanese carrier is a typical example.
You can fly multiplayer by yourself. We refer to it as "Host-only".
The advantage of this is that the friendly and enemy bases can be set as well as the target, and as it is not online then time acceleration is possible.

Is it possible to use the theatres included in the 1.28 GOG package (like BoB or DAW for example) in the 1.28c version? i saw that the two versions have two different systems to handle file management.

Thanks again you've been extremely helpful smile

Just for information 1.28c was the first release that used the "dir.set" system. Before that mod files had to be moved into the root folder and removed from it when they were not needed. OAW was a utility that did this well, hence its use in the GoG1.28 patch.

The only thing that is copied into the root folder in 1.28c is the "Dir.set" file. This contains the path-names to the folders containing the files that the exe needs to read. The exe reads these files.
I may well have the GoG theatres that you would like in another 1.28c folder. If I can find them then I can make an expansion pack for you and other users.

Yes exactly i saw that the 1.28c uses dir.sets and 1.28 GOG simply uses folders with code letters that the utility reads and installs, very cool.

Again, that would be even more awesome, but i wouldn't want to bother you every time i want to install some theatre so that you would have to make yet another package, that doesn't seem entirely fair to me. That's why i've been interested to know how dir.sets work, so that maybe i can do that on my own, but again i'm not a programmer by any means so maybe that's impossible.

Here's a patch that adds more theatres and some other files: https://www.mediafire.com/file/eicf4hb6gsgrawn/128cPatch25March2023.exe/file.

Run the downloaded file in your "UAW128c 2020 May11th" folder

There are some problems with the DAW and Malta skins. This is a readme from the original DAW:

//DAW Skinpack
//////////////

This file should list the origins of all skins appearing in the DAW-skinpack to give proper credit to all their creators.
A lot of these skins were enhanced and tweaked during the process of generating this skinpack, it was not possible to keep track with all enhancements which were included to all planes. To place the planes in their DAW-aircraft slots, Paulo Morais' utility SnapShot and hexediting have been used.
Special thanks to Col. Gibbon for the help with the hardpoints and Moggy for his great work on several shadow-files.

- The cockpit of the Me 210A is created from pieces using different standard-cockpits. It was not possible due to the slot (262A) to add correct cockpit-gauches. As the 262a-slot does not support transparent propellors, the skin for the wingview is shared with the Bf 110C.

Note: This skinpack is far from being perfect!

I remember having this problem reusing the 262a slot in 128c times.

I'll check and see what I did in the original Dunkirk.

It was basically slot-sharing. Here is Andy's email to me of 15th January 2003, nine months after that DAW readme:

Quote

Hi Moggy,

maybe I have something for you:
Chompy found out how to use the virtual cockpit transparencies in non
flyable slots also. So these can now completely be used within
campaigns. :o)
Greetings,
Andy.

Subject: 110 props for the 262

Hi Andy,
Here's the files I made up. The 262ay.3dz is the new twin props and uses the texture from the 110c.
The 262aU.3dz is the renamed 262 wingview (was Y) and still uses 262 textures. Just drop the files in and fly the 262 to check it out.

If you wanted to have, say the 110c wingview (or whatever aircraft suits best), just take the default 110cY.3dz from the CDF, convert to text and blank out the prop elements (which are E116 to E146), then save + convert it as the P****U.3dz of your particular slot. You will also have to rename the 262ay.3dz I made so that it suits your chosen slot, but I guess you already knew that!

Let me know if you have any questions. As I mentioned in the thread, you can shift the props to suit by adjusting the x y z values in the INSERT section. Hope this is some help to you. What aircraft are you planning to make flyable?

BTW, Mr J's method of using the 1st colour in the palette would be useful for doing the gunsight if you cannot access transparencies, but the only problem is that the textures will either be transparent or not - there are no in-betweens.

John.

Still, it worked very well:

That's a great package, thank you very much.

I didn't notice any problems so far regarding the Malta skins. The only problem i encountered is that the Ardennes theatre seems to not load the winter terrain for me, doesn't matter the date or mode.

Thanks again you're awesome smile

Hi again,
Is there a way to use tools like the Career Editor or Career linker in Win10? those don't run anymore because they are DOS programs.

You could experiment with DosBox. I have successfully used it to run a number of EAW utilities thar W10 won't run.

If the main reason you want to use career editor is to switch planes, you can use an alternate method by utilizing the plane set maker program. It only takes a few clicks to edit a plane set to take out one plane and insert another. There are instructions around here somewhere but if not, I'd be happy to repost them for you.

Re: Issues and information with the GoG and Steam releases - 04/28/23 07:04 PM

No, i wanted simply to edit Careerxx.sve files to modify sorties and kills to "transfer" my pilot across different careers. I managed to make a couple utilites work but they don't work well with various add-ons so i can't really do that. Nevermind, it is what it is.
