Any movies that inspired you to read the book?

Any movies that inspired you to read the book? - 12/07/22 06:41 PM

What are some movies that you've seen which you liked so much that you were inspired to read the novel or short story it was based on? There are only two for me:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

2. Dune (The David Lynch version)

However, I have a few on my reading list that I hope to get to some day soon:

A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (Blade Runner)
Lord of the Rings

Scarface, a 1983 novel by Paul Monette, trust me the movie was better.

I believe though that in this case it was a novelization of the Brian De Palma movie?

I think I saw the movie "Flight of the Intruder" before reading the book.

I read "The Goonies" novel first, before I saw the movie. The book inspired me to see the film. Same with "Hunt for Red October," "Cocoon" and "Lord of the Rings."

But "Dune" inspired me to read the novel.

I have yet to read the Clancy novel but I think Hunt for Red October is by FAR the best of the Clancy film adaptations. None of the others even come close in my opinion.

For me, it was 2001 and Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep.

I also read the original Frankenstein story to compare it to the movies, and was pleasantly surprised.

Of the original script, there were many changes.

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for that info! I think a re-watch of Scarface is in order for me since I've not seen it in probably about 20 years.

Watch Scarface with surround sound turned up loud, on a big screen, for maximum pleasure.

Saw “Jaws” and that made want to read the book. One of the very few instances where the movie was better than the book.

Starship Troopers.
I had to read the book to see what the controversy was about, and while it has its moments, is fairly dull.
Verhoeven surely brought the story to life. biggrin

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, the old animated ones.

I read Forrest Gump after the movie and then read Gump & Company the sequel. Why there is no movie sequel. We also went on vacation to go to Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant.

You really should read Clear & Present Danger. Clancy’s best book, IMO, and so much better than the movie that you hardly recognize that the movie was in fact made from that book.

I first saw Master and Commander when it was released in 2003, and walked by the first three books in a bookstore in 2007 I think it was, so I bought them since I liked the movie, and the cover art paintings by Geoff Hunt are beautiful. The rest is history. I’m currently on my eighth “circumnavigation” of the series, as the fans like to call it.

I felt "Jurassic Park" was that way too, although I read the book before seeing the movie.

Yes, and also the sequel (read book[s] decades after first seeing movie)...

Captain Horatio Hornblower: loved this movie as a kid. When a few years later I found out this was an entire series of novels, my parents always knew what to get me for Christmas smile
Master and Commander: I still beat myself up over not knowing about these until the movie.

I definitely need to rewatch "Master & Commander". It's been too long. The dvd set I bought years ago came with a very nice fold out map of the South Atlantic.
