Grease came out when I was 10, and I thought she was...knew she was gorgeous.

WIKI:

Quote
Due to an editing error, a closing scene in which Danny and Sandy kiss was removed from the finished print and lost before its theatrical release. The scene was preserved only in black-and-white; Kleiser (the DIRECTOR) attempted to have the existing footage colorized and restored to the film for the film's re-release in 1998 but was dissatisfied with the results. The scene is included as an extra on the 40th anniversary home video release, and Kleiser hopes to make another attempt at colorizing the footage that is effective enough for the footage to be inserted into the film as he originally intended by the time the film's 50th anniversary comes in 2028

Someone in the edit room fell asleep to cut the ending out of the film. HERE it is:

Interesting NFB, I'll have to check that out later (probably going to be a Grease/Xanadu double feature Friday night).

Usually need something stronger for yard work, but going to do some favorite ON-J this evening (her early stuff sounds more Country/Carpenters)...

Not often that I'm surprised when it comes to our collection of music/concerts, but I told my wife about my ON-J movie plans and she said she can do better...

A "hippie dinner" and a concert (and I'll always take a concert over a movie)...

1980: My brother (with a serious hi-fi stereo at the time) had the LP soundtrack and it really grew on me. I was more into early Rush 8-tracks, but this was something different, even to what he normally listened to (Beatles, Floyd, Zepp, Doors, Styx, etc.). In fact, I attribute the ON-J side of that album for developing a...softer side, which would soon serve me well.

1984: First time at future wife's home I see Xanadu on Betamax. "Cool, I like the soundtrack, you like the movie, let's watch it!"...................."What the?!" <still scratching head over this one>

I still like the soundtrack, though. Olivia sings like an angel.

She truly was a warrior. It's incredible to me that she fought breast cancer for 30 years.

Re: RIP Olivia Newton-John - 08/09/22 03:51 PM

RIP ONJ.
Like many had a crush from early-ish years - she was very close with Cliff Richard & used to be a regular on his shows back in the 70s _through Grease & Xanadu etc
She was gorgeous, talented, no doubt well compensated & apparently a lovely person but she didn't have an easy life with a partner that went missing, the cancer etc..

I guess that the value of her sewn-in black trousers from Grease just went up a whole notch.

Re: RIP Olivia Newton-John - 08/09/22 04:02 PM

Wow... Not only dancing with Gene Kelly, but tap dancing with him! Granted, it's not like when he was in his prime, but that is still a pretty good feather in her cap.

I have never watched Xanadu. I guess I need to rectify that someday, even if it is weird.

Rest in peace Olivia.

Xanadu is one of those rare movies which flopped at the box office but had a massively popular top selling soundtrack.

"Suddenly" (Cliff Richard duet) was a favorite at our local rink...

I remember thinking the first time I saw Xanadu, "That's not Cliff Richard" who I thought starred in the movie.

Would give anything to have an old-school rink again (70's/80's tunes only). A fantastic way to burn an absurd amount of calories in ~3 hours. smile

The last one I went to was circa 1982 and I actually remember the details of that day pretty well. All of the old school roller skating rinks in the Miami area were gone by the late 80's.

Yeah, the most current song I remember playing at our rink (before it closed) was VH's "Jump" (1984). Also Rush's "Tom Sawyer" was popular along with some other current Rock tunes mixed in with the regular 70's/80's Disco/Dance/Funk rink staples.

So she was 30 in 1978, when Grease came out. So I was in love with someone who could have been my Mom.
I would have guessed she was early 20's at most.

I can see people roller skating to Jump but Tom Sawyer?? screwy

The songs I remember most from my short-lived roller skating days as a kid is stuff like "Let's Groove Tonight", "Funky Town" and "YMCA".

She definitely looked younger than 30 and apparently the producers of "Grease" agreed since they cast her as a high school student!

Not quite but she sure looked it! LOL I think she was like 35.

Re: RIP Olivia Newton-John - 08/09/22 07:14 PM

WIKI says she (Channing) was the oldest at 33

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_(film)#Casting

Quote
Stockard Channing, At 33 she was the oldest cast member to play a high school student, and Kleiser (director) made her and the other actors playing students take a "crow’s feet test" ??? to see whether they could pass for younger in close-ups.Softer focus was used on some of the older actors' faces.

Re: RIP Olivia Newton-John - 08/09/22 11:16 PM

Listening to my ON-J playlist (posted on page 1) a few times through, I'm reminded that for a pop artist, Olivia gave us coming-of-age males at the time a fine example of an innocent aura being incredibly attractive (sans *bad girl* Sandy smile ).

I get similar vibes from Lisa Loeb, but can't think of any female pop artist more modern that gives off these same vibes in her music and look (probably me just being so out of touch).

The 1970's aren't coming back.

Australia will give Olivia Newton-John a State funeral. She deserves it. Even when she is fighting her own cancer, she sold all her real estate and things to open cancer research centers and foundations to help other cancer patient. That is a very generous person.

^ Showed above video to wife, now trying to figure out how much we would have paid to be in that audience. But would we *really* have appreciated the moment at the time?

Last time we had this conversation was in the 90's, Atlanta, for an intimate fancy-dinner concert featuring both Carly Simon and James Taylor. I forget the pricing, but it was up there, waaay beyond our means at the time. Now we could probably do it, but would need a set-list first. I don't trust JT as it seems his shows are too heavy on non-hits.
