Our last dog

Our last dog - 01/24/22 05:33 PM

Today we put down our last dog , Marley. She was a valley bulldog that originally belonged to my late son Philip. Their average life span is 8-10 years and she was 11 1/2 . Philip died from complications of diabetes 6 years ago last Octber. He was 29. This seems like the last link to him has been cut.
We are at an age where we will not take on another dog but will foster and dog sit. We are now forstering a Saluki pup just under a year old
Life goes on

My sincere condolences Archie on both of your losses. I don't recall you mentioning your son here before so this revelation really hit me. I know it can sound like a cliche' at times but none of us can ever take life for granted.

My sincerest condolences Archie. Nothing affects me like the loss of, or suffering of a dog, aside from bad things happening to my kids. Dogs are a gift.

Your plan to fill the void sounds good, but for me it would be many mini-separations that probably wouldn't make it any easier!

The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.

When I was a kid, I had a plan I would announce to everyone who would listen, and that's I was going to move to Sakatchewan, with my dog and my Jeep CJ-5. All I need smile

My condolences Archie..I've lost many furry friends over the years. And every time told my self no more.My late girl friend who was with me after I lost my dear friend Winston.Saw me dragging butt after a few days got on me and said what is bothering you?? And she knew and we got another pup.My M8 passed and I had Mary Sue a yellow lab for a few days and she passed and again I swore no more.Well here I am with a miniature doberman Iggy.Under 10 pounds but knock on my door and you think I have a wolf in the house. All my dogs have been pound puppies and I prefer their company to humans. Also have adopted a cat that showed up on my deck,She comes in during the day and hangs out with us but wants to go outside at night so I built her a hut on my deck and file it with straw. She sees the lights come on in the morning and gets on the table and meows at the window.
Can't imagine life without a furry friend and always remember my ones who passed with a smile for what we shared. My son was named after a black lab named Charlie.
I totally agree with DBond "The more people I meet, the more I like my dog."

Sorry to hear Archie, truly a heartbreaking time. we have put down 3 Boxers over the years, it gets harder every time. We have had a dog for 23 years straight, most years with 2 at a time. It is sad to see the younger dog looking for their mentor. It took us 13 months to decide to get another dog, in November. It was strange having no dog. We got an American Bulldog, Artie. My Avatar is his picture from Nov.6th right after i picked him from a litter of 10. He is 4 months old today.
I never heard of a valley Bulldog, but I google it, and they look like Arties father.
I was surprised to find out that there a 15 breeds of Bulldogs.

Anyway, so sorry for you Archie, I know I am completely heartbroken for about 2 days, every time.
But I always think of how many smiles and laughs they brought us over the years. A few days of heartbreak is still worth it.

Being a connection to your late son must truly amplify the mourning. Thinking of you Archie. I never met a Newfie I didn't like. Mostly because they could keep up with me drinking. But I don't do that anymore.
Newfoundlanders are actually happy when someone knocks on their door at supper time...come on in, grab a chair, hungry ?
Us mainlanders could learn a lot from you guys.

Why not post a picture of Marley ? If you are up to it.

I am truly very sorry for your loss my friend, both of them in fact, as I expect Marley's passing was a reminder of your son Philip's so very early departure from this world.

Coincidently, my youngest son's name is Phillip, with an extra L.

Again, sorry for your loss Archie.

My sincere condolences, Archie. I didn’t know about your son either.

We just had our second child in September, and his name is Philip. Our dog Wilma, a Welsh Springer Spaniel, will be 6 in March. I prefer not to think too much about the day I have to take the final trip to the vet with her.

Dogs are family like humans. Lost my 10 year old GSD in July, died in my arms. Will never forget the last time he looked up at me as he knew. Said I would never have another dog - now got a 18 month old rescue GSD with problems but its the nicest feeling to give a dog another chance.

Best way is to use an image hosting site. I use this one LINK
It is free. Drag and drop your photo. It then gives you share links. BBCode links work for me here at SimHQ.
copy/paste the link(from IMGUR) in your SimHq post. It will appear.

My heart breaks whenever I hear about the loss of our K-9 Kids. Ive put down 3 large dogs over 30 years and held them while crying like a little girl each time. Said, No more then saw this furry little guy in a Shelter. He wagged his tail and something clicked so took him home.

Rescue dogs are certainly the way to go and I applaud anyone who rescues.
