I saw a an "expert" on TV say that the rocket could fall anywhere as far north as New York City or as far south as New Zealand. I guess it doesn't take much to be a "TV expert".

Ha! Basically he’s saying it will fall «somewhere on Earth.»

Read an article where an expert suggested there was a greater chance it would fall in water than on land . . .

What is so hard not to understand? The lines are the track of the object has taken in its flight.

This is the next expert CNN and MSNBC will have on to guess were the ship will land. I hear he's really good.

Since cable news networks operate 24/7, they are constantly trying to find enough material to talk about so they can fill up those time slots. As a result, audiences get TONS of irrelevant fluff including stupid commentary such as what we have seen concerning the Chinese rocket.

Maybe just an isolated incident, because everybody in China likes a good green deal.

Debris from Chinese space rocket booster reenters Earth’s atmosphere over Indian Ocean near Maldives, China reports

The hulk of the Chinese Long March rocket reentered Earth’s atmosphere around 10:30 p.m. Eastern time over the Indian Ocean near the Maldives, China’s Manned Space Engineering Office reported late Saturday night.

Videos on social media showed the 22-ton rocket, which had been drifting uncontrolled in low orbit for days, blazing a trail of light over Oman as most of its components burned up in the atmosphere.

There were no immediate reports of damage from falling debris.

The U.S. Space Command’s Space Track Project said in a tweet: “Everyone else following the #LongMarch5B re-entry can relax. The rocket is down.”

CRASH LANDING Chinese rocket tracker LIVE: 21-ton booster debris PLUNGES into Indian Ocean on Sunday despite fears it would hit US
..
THERE was a lot of speculation about where the Chinese rocket part would land before it plunged into the Indian Ocean in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Experts warned it could reach "as far north as Chicago, New York City, Rome and Beijing and as south as New Zealand and Chile" before the debris' dramatic re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

China launched its first space station on Thursday in the first of 11 missions that will see a three-person crew sent up by the end of 2022.

But the rocket part that broke off as planned was due to have a controlled re-entry - until Chinese authorities lost the ability to coordinate its landing.

It was circling the Earth and was expected to crash land this weekend, with scientists trying to pinpoint the exact location it will hit, before parts of the Long March 5B re-entered the atmosphere at 10:24am Beijing time.

Although it had the potential to hit in a highly-populated area, the Pentagon has refused to shoot it down and most of the debris burned up in the atmosphere, reported Reuters, citing Chinese state media.

Re: Chinese Rocket - 05/11/21 08:06 PM

I haven't seen any mention of how far it hit from the Maldives, but the maps that were shown on the news made it look uncomfortably close in terms of something like this.

On the opposite end of the precision scale, NASA launched its OSIRIS-REx mission nearly five years ago. It rendezvoused with asteroid 101955 Bennu about two and a half years ago, orbited the asteroid for nearly two years at a mean altitude of roughly 800 meters, launched and recovered a probe that gathered samples of the asteroid, and is expected to return those samples to a test range in Utah on 24 September, 2023.
