Breaking News!!!

Couple Sparks Riots by Driving Around Neighborhoods,
Using A Bullhorn to Shout "Alexa, Play Nickelback!!"

Homeowners confused, distraught, burn own houses down

Don't take much to tick some folks off LOL

LOL

Probably the funniest thing about that joke is that most people under the age of 30 have no clue about Nickelback. It's ok though, that generation has Cardi B so they have it much worse.

I take it then that Nickelback wasn't very popular in Brazil. That would explain why you don't get the joke!

Nickelback is one of those bands which have sold millions of albums but they are still made fun of and mocked by many people. In that sense they are like ABBA or the New Kids on the Block.

I don't know a single one of their songs, so they must be bad. smile

I'm old enough to have heard them, too, but 90s era music often makes my ears bleed.

To each their own of course but I think there was quite a lot of good music put out in that decade. By comparison, mainstream music now makes the music from the 90's seem like pure genius.

Re: Breaking News!!! - 01/07/21 04:04 PM

Yeah, not all of it was bad. There was some catchy stuff here or there.

Nickelback was Metallica for soccer Moms. Awful.

I agree with Panzer, there was a lot of great music that came out in the 90's, better decade than the 80's or 2000's.

All my personal preferences of course but these artists put out some great stuff in the 90's:

Nine Inch Nails
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Smashing Pumpkins
Green Day
Beastie Boys
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Soundgarden

Re: Breaking News!!! - 01/07/21 04:23 PM

NiN and Smashing Pumpkins had some good songs, so did Beastie Boys.

I prefer stuff from the 70s and 80s, particularly the instrumental electronic stuff known as "ambient space music," and from the 1100s - 1400s, and the baroque and classical periods of the 1600s - 1800s.

Rarely do I understand lyrics in a song, has to do with how my brain interprets sound visually.

This is a good list except for Smashing Pumpkins. I have heard from multiple people that they were absolutely awful in concert. No Pearl Jam?

Re: Breaking News!!! - 01/07/21 06:11 PM

I like the joke, lol. I was watching a video and they gave an example of a lame feature of Alexa, and actually gave the command to have it rap, and sure enough, my Alexa device responded, so it's something that could certainly happen. smile.

And I am sure I will be looked upon with scorn for this but there is actually a Nickelback song that I like, although I take solace in the fact that it's a cover, and not written by them.

Their singer's voice was annoying and their instrumental composition had no visually pleasing qualities. Somehow, though, my senior class in high school voted them best band of the year.

Over the years I have come to really appreciate Pearl Jam, I listen to them a lot these days. They have some great music.
Green Day I could never stand, I just want to wipe Billy's nose and tell him to grow up.
The worst vocalist of the 90's ?, the guy from The Offspring, holy crap, that is just torture for me.

Neil Young influenced Pearl Jam. Neil was grunge (among other things) before anyone.

The singer of Oasis was far, far worse.

Offspring had some good songs--"Special Delivery" is one of my favorites.

I would describe that voice as "excruciatingly whiney". These were the guys who said they would be the "next Beatles".

I have no idea who any of the groups thus far mentioned are.

Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) is the worst. Full stop.

Offspring is great. Smash is a legend.

I'll take Oasis over The Offspring any day.
What's The Story ? (Morning Glory) and Definitely Maybe are fantastic albums.

YOU TAKE THAT BACK ! someone hold me back! Hold me baaaaaaaack!

honestly while there are gems in 90s it was the last decade of music for me, 80s song were upbeat, you got metal, rock, pop, jazz, etc 90s rock was people in revolted and angsty, 2000s went full emo and pop gave way to #%&*$# song about their ex, and all songs were comercial. gone is that time a artist took it time for a release.
at least in the west, now i understand why japan loves single albums so much, always seemed stupid to me as a kid. And maybe it was back when we were stuck with lps and cds, but with streaming, nah.

The second half of the 80's was awful, crap like Poison, Winger and Slaughter. I don't know what was pumped out faster, new hair metal bands or their nauseating ballads.
Thank God the 90's came and Nirvana, Pearl Jam, RHCP, STP, AIC and Soundgarden but that crap to sleep.

I think the only worthy and talented group that came out of the big hair metal band era is Bon Jovi.
