Seems particularly topical:

J. Michael Lane, a globe-trotting epidemiologist who waged a 13-year war against the scourge of smallpox and led the final drive for its global eradication in 1977, when the last known vestige of the disease was snuffed out in East Africa, died on Wednesday at his home in Atlanta. He was 84.

I was too young to have the small, round, dimpled scar on my upper arm characteristic of the innoculation. As far as anyone knows, there are only two clusters of (virus) samples currently maintained on Earth!

*edit: added word virus to clarify my last sentence.

RIP.

My sister (60) has that inoculation scar, not sure about my brother (58). I (53) nor wife (53) do not.

July 1966 I received my scar, took 2 attempts before it took.
It was compulsory to have it before going over to Europe , as the first attempt did not work I was given it again the night before we left to go to drive to Portugal, I was ill from it all through the trip through France but I got my scar smile

Same arm slightly higher up, only one scar, I had no reaction at all to the first attempt, waited and watched and it just healed over, second time was 3 weeks after the first attempt and a couple of days later I was unwell and slept most of the trip through France. I remember Paris and the Eifel Tower and something about mum ordering a tomato salad at a roadside restaurant and getting a plate of sliced tomato - boy was she miffed. Stopping at a hotel in Orleans and the receptionist was from the next town in Scotland from where we lived - she sent us to another hotel as the one she worked at she said it was not worth the money and where she sent us was very good. Those were the highlights, but memories from Spain and Portugal are a lot better and I still have the little china ornament that a young girl gave me that her father had made smile well we were both about 10 years old at the time

Yes, that was about the time. Every kid in school had to get it.

Hmm, I do not see a scar on my arm.

I was born in Germany in 64, came back stateside, went back to Germany in 66, came back stateside and then again back to Germany in in 1970 and finally back stateside again in 75.

(or some variation of those years)

With all the shots the Army/USA/Germany required going back & forth could I still not have gotten it?

To be honest, mine has faded considerably in the intervening 48 years. If I didn't know where it once was prominent I probably couldn't find it at all now.
