Games that you felt were too long?

What are some games that you enjoyed but you also felt were unnecessarily dragged out? I recently replayed "Black Mesa" which is a graphically enhanced remake of the original Half Life. It took me about 30 hours to finish but I felt that the story could have been wrapped up much earlier than that. By around the 20-25 hour mark I was ready for the game to end. I also remember the original "Far Cry". I also enjoyed that one and some of the level design was really well done but after about 20 hours I kept wondering when the game was going to end.

Far Cry 4 was apparently nice and short. You could be done and gone inside 10 minutes iirc.

Yeah I remember laughing about that one when I first read about it. You just stay there at the warlords house for about 15 minutes or so and when he returns the game ends.

I completely agree with Black Mesa

Hitman 2 made me give up on the franchise. I paid 90 bucks for it, and because of the time-limited content you HAD to play the game on a fixed bi-weekly schedule or you were fcked. HAVING to play the game for a full year even though you paid ridiculous money for it is just.... I have no words for it.

Doom 3. The story doesn't progress for a couple of hours, which make those hours enormously boring and tedious.

Metal Gear Solid 5: To artificially lengthen the game, they repeat the earlier missions with different objectives. Always a bad idea, especially when half the game is already lots of content and thus there is no reason to artificially lengthen it.

TLOU2 really dragged on, it's about 10 hours longer than the original and much of it is tedious.

Black Mesa did feel long, but I appreciate the lengthening of the alien stages. When Half Life was originally released, the alien worlds were an afterthought. Black Mesa did a good job fleshing them out and giving them more meaning, despite feeling a lot like the original "Prey," and some ridiculous cheapness in one or two spots--I actually had to turn on god mode because the auto save put me in such a precarious position I was left with 5 health in a spot that required me to take 50 damage. I think was also playing on hardest difficulty, so that might have had something to do with it. Regardless, it did feel long.

On the flip side, I feel that Dragon's Dogma was too short... I guess many folks would consider it just right, but the gameplay is so good it begs for more.

These days I also treasure 90 minute movies, which seems to be a thing of the past. Most recent films seem to hit the 2+ hour mark frequently.

It depends usually on the genre. The majority of comedies and animated movies tend to run 90 minutes or less.

Yeah. I don't watch much of either of those genres nowadays, however, if they're more recent films. Dramas and sci-fi are my favorite, as well as horror--particularly slasher films, which... aren't often made anymore.

I love Witcher 3, but as I play my second game now as NG+, I notice how much there is to do in order to even progress the story...

I can understand that sentiment. Witcher 3 is one of the best RPG's I've ever played but since it took me about 230 hours to complete one playthrough (including the DLC's) I have been taking my time before I commit to a second playthrough because I know it will be a major time commitment.

This caught my attention, as I played Hitman 2 earlier this year (combined with Hitman 2016). My initial reaction was that my experience was very different. But then I remembered that they drip-fed the campaign missions. So early players had little content and were reliant on the Elusive Targets to keep them engaged. This ET content is timed, and I assume what you are referring to Vaderini?

Now though we have the full campaign (8 levels), Sniper Assassin missions (three) and Special Assignments (four), plus they still have the Elusive Target stuff. I never felt that I had to play the timed stuff, and frankly I only have done a few. But maybe that's because the game had all the content released by the time I got around to it. Plus, I bought Hitman (2016) and combined the two games under the 2018 umbrella so it feels like there is a lot of content for me to play even before I count the time-limit stuff.

I really like this game and never felt the way you do about it. I see the Elusive Targets as bonus content that's constantly rotating, but I think if I bought it at release I would have felt the same as you.

I think the MQ is only around 25 hours, and it has been completed in a ridiculously short time ~ 2:27 was an old record, since broken, but by what margin I didn't look up.

My playing style is much more leisurely, with hardly any use of fast travel, no dialogue or cutscene skipping, fairly comprehensive map completion. I prefer a more naturalistic time flow as well, using a mod to give daycycles at 2:1 or 1:1 (according to taste) rather than the 15:1 or 20:1 (I forget which W3 is... but KCD has a similar 15:1 flow, which I also have now set to 2:1). This allows me to want to 'do something this morning' and actually have enough time to get some actions done after walking/riding to the location, rather than arriving mid-afternoon and spending an entire night in a single skirmish.

Not game specific, but I think there's too much emphasis on achievements and tedious make-work mechanics in games in general in recent years.

Most modern games, especially the "open world" ones.

Witcher 3
Assassin's Creed Origins
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Horizon Zero Dawn
Mafia 3 - underwhelming game overall
Mass Effect Andromeda

Any game that runs over 30 hours tend to be too long for its own good. Most just add filler and junk content to keep it going harming the narrative flow.

Hearts of Iron 4.
Seriously, not many. But I tend not to play 'regular' games any more, just some RPGs like Pathfinder, and flight sims. Since flight sims have no end, they can't really be too long.

I found Middle Earth: Shadow of War to be excellent! The story was great, more of what made the first game so much fun, you even fight Sauron at the end... which is not the end! Now prepare for seemingly endless hours of repetitive fortress defense and assault grinding before you reach the actual end. Roughly half my time spent on the game was the useless second part.

I really enjoyed both Middle Earth games by Monolith but I also agree with you 100% that the grinding events can get repetitive and tedious after a while. Then again, almost all open-world games have this characteristic.

Any Assassin's Creed game after the first one, and they keep getting worse.

during hitman 2016 ETs were time locked, and they didnt come back at all, they said it was a limitation on the game.....right...hitman same story, but after poor sales ........the engine limitation was solved.....who knew.
