Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 08/11/20 07:59 PM

The old old heads of SimHQ know who he is. I am on a quest to look for him. Anyone heard from him?

Re: Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 08/13/20 02:49 AM

The problem with getting old is not being able to remember some things...like my forum pswd, for example. So I poured a little tequila on the issue and that fixed that!!

I'm still alive and kicking here in St Louis. I retired for good in 2017 and haven't regretted it a bit. I replaced flight sims with my old childhood hobby of model plane making, and so I've been quite busy building stick and tissue models from scratch.

Has anyone heard from my old pal Leon "Badboy" Smith? I'd love to get back in touch with him.

So, is this the Old Fart Cartholder meeting? biggrin

Nice to see you all well, especially in these days.

Heck, just came to realize next year it will be two decades of SimHQ for many of us. eek2

And for me that means over the sum of my lifespan I will have been a member on this site for longer than I haven't. Yikes!

That's true, soon to enter my third decade here, but even so the balance is in favor of the years I have not been a member. If I make it to 2033 then the scales are balanced biggrin

Hehe, some old farts here.
There`s quite a few retired pilots that has flight models or model flying as a hobby.
We have a club here that even has a guy who flew Spitfires in the Norwegian Air Force.
I think he has some hours in the F-104G as wel.l
Here is the guy. 96 and still going strong.

Until when did the Norwegian AF use Spitfires? I'm thinking it was probably well into the 1950's?

As for old farts on SimHQ, I've never done an extensive demographic study but I'd say the average age on SimHQ probably hovers around the 45-50 range.

That's still to be determined how much time i have. I couldn't find my old CH maps for BMS for example and that alone made me realize why I stop simming. May take me a full day just setting up my controller. But I do like detailed study sims. My problem was always how dead the Lockon environments felt. Like empty.

Unless you have VR. Then by all means get DCS World and fly the free aircraft. There is also an excellent free A-4 Skyhawk that it's too hardcore (ie no radar etc). The A-10A is also not too terribly a difficult aircraft to learn well enough to enjoy. Forget VR, even if you don't have it try DCS anyway wink

That is a valid observation and one made by many simmers. This is why 90% of my DCS stick time is multiplayer so I at least have the interaction and communication with other human players.

Yep. A common complaint.

However, I recently found that isn't always the case.

I jumped into a Persian Gulf F-18 mission (a stock, "canned" mission included with sim) a few days ago that was very "alive". Launching off the CV at night in the Gulf of Oman headed up to Iran to hit some ASCM sites and the area was swarming with other aircraft, ships, vehicles etc. I am still learning the F-18 so I wasn't much help to the cause but I watched a lot of action going on around me and I even killed an Iranian F4 that stumbled out in front of me (he was busy engaging someone else with an AIM7). So "alive" missions are possible in DCS!

I have been doing DCS for awhile and despite it flaws and god knows it has flaws. It has satisfies my itch for a combat flight sim. I cannot get enough of the F-14 module for example. And the Supercarrier is a must.

Re: Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 08/31/20 06:44 PM

Yeah I am really eyeing that F14 and F18 more than anything.

At the same time, i don't want to be too ambitious. I am going to have to see how things go come September. What a crappy year this has been. My 5 year old daughter (soon 6) is starting first grade and its going to be 100% remote at home to start school year. I am guessing its going to be like that for a white. So i know thats going to take up a lot of my time doing school work with her.

FS2020 has been a hell lotta fun though. Really made me realize what i have been missing last 10 years or so. Even though it has a lot of flaws, i have been really impressed with it.

I'll come back with I can't count how many times some youngster cashier in recent years took forever to count back my change EVEN THOUGH the cash register calculates it for them. They seem to struggle with bills and coins like they're in kindergarten and haven't really figured out numbers beyond what they can count on their fingers.

This is not some obsolete "skill" like knowing how to operate and maintain a manual typewriter or something.

It's COUNTING MONEY.

Posted By: Nixer

Re: Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 09/09/20 12:00 AM

Kevin, aka PositiveG was his name.

Armed Assault prolly Paul. We had a really large crew for quite awhile.

edit: Great to see you dropping in BTW, along with all the other old "vets".
Posted By: Nixer

Re: Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 09/09/20 12:28 AM

You mentioned him, even if not by name, and I had to look.

My last saved PM from PositiveG was in Aug, 2009. We were talking about a hurricane headed his way. I had PM's saved from a bunch of "departed folks". Kevin's are the only two left.

Armed Assault I and the SimHq crew... So many great folks involved. I think Adlabs, Panzer, Dart and myself are about the only ones I have "seen" here lately. Used to see JoJo once in awhile. Jedi, Magnum, Wepps, Biff, XRoC, and so many other great people, we were playing with like 20+ humans a few nights a week. Heck we even roped in Chris (BeechAV8R) and many others. Following and including the huge IL2 gaggle we had, it was SimHq's glory days IMHO.

So many gone we know of, and no doubt many of the "poof" and gone folks have joined them.

I started a list awhile back...too hard.

I do have fond memories of playing Arma with the crew though.

That would be Joint Ops! It’s hard to believe we were playing that game over 15 years ago. I believe the game came out in 2004?

Joint Ops was a really great COOP game. Sometimes a little Run and Gun, but still took some strategery. Loved using the Sniper/Helo teams
I don't recall, if you died did you respawn back in, or have to wait until match was over?

I'm pretty sure you could respawn after waiting a couple of minutes. At least that's how I remember the SimHQ matches being set up.

Re: Anyone Heard from Andy Bush in the Past Few Years? - 09/10/20 02:04 PM

That's what I remember too, although I think the spawn points could be far from the action.

If you want a game that can be played coop that is good, Insurgency Sandstorm is nice, and Ground Branch looks really good (its in early access, and is still a little rough, but lots of fun).

Is anyone still in touch with +G's family? I'd love to send a note to his kid, telling him how much I cared for his dad, and how nice and caring he was.

My one interaction with PositiveG was when he sent me some C code for an EF2000 campaign resource program he had started. I couldn't make heads or tails of it at the time, will revisit it one day. A really nice guy.

I remember this vaguely. What happened to him?

Anyone recalls who was the member who posted the "Immelmann was a cheater" and the mod/admin reacting to it? Was in the Il-2 board IIRC.

I seldom laughed so hard in my whole live.

Immelmann was obviously not a very good cheater since he didn't survive the war. wink

Hi Andy

Great to find this, I'd love to to get back in touch also.

Please check out your private messages on this board where I've sent you my email.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Also I tried to ring an old phone number I have for you from 2013, is that likely to be the same one? Tried it but only got the answer machine. If its the same number just give me a good time to call and I'll try again.

Looking forward to talking with you again my old friend.
