If You Could Attend Any 5 Concerts in History

I was just wondering, if I could attend any five musical performances in history, what would I choose?

Not in any particular order:

1. Beethoven conducts the premiere of his 9th Symphony while totally deaf and the orchestra has to indicate to him to turn around at the end to see the audience's rapturous reaction.

2. Buddy Holly, the Surf Ballroom, Clear Lake, Iowa the night of his death.

3. The Beatles, the roof top performance atop Abbey Road Studios or their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Not sure which one.

4. Jimi Hendrix, Monterrey Pop Festival 1967

5. Mozart's last public performance, whatever it may have been, possibly his Piano Concerto No. 27.

No3. You would be standing there wondering where everybody was! The performance I think you were referring to took place on the roof of their 'Apple Corps' in Savile Row. I didn't witness it being at some distance away, but staff of the printers we used near Carnaby Street did and got reprimanded for leaving the works without permission. Many establishment types huffed, puffed and tutted over the disruption to 'normal business.'

As to 4. I'd want to return to Isle of White festival where I was cold, wet and too poorly with a cold to leave the tent and slept through Jimi's set!

In no particular order, and with no specific dates:

Van Halen circa 1981.

Metallica before Cliff Burton died.

Led Zeppelin shortly after the release of their 4th album.

Pink Floyd before The Wall.

Black Sabbath with Ozzy.

This is a fun idea.

I'd like to attend a musical performance in ancient Greece or maybe in ancient Mesopotamia. I would not want to stay however.

Any Mickey Newbury concert. In particular though, I'd like to have been in attendance when he performed at the Bitter End West where he famously put together on the spot for the first time An American Trilogy.

I think Mickey Newbury performed at shows with or in the line up of others like Harry Chapin. I'd love to see a show full of those songwriter singers.

I would have liked to have been at the place and time at which Amazing Grace was first heard by a public audience.

There's so many I'd like to see and hear especially from history. Another would be to see a long performance of Clannad maybe mid 1980s.

I'd love to see one of those cool old jazz bands in their heyday at a speak easy. So mid 1920's, preferably a higher class affair

Did Astaire and Rogers ever do a concert in their prime? That'd be cool.

Any Bon Scott fronted gig circa '77-'78

Metallica Tushino airfield in Moscoow '91. Free concert, a million plus Russians, what could go wrong?

Only two come to mind: Queen at Wembley 1985 and U2 at Slane Castle, 2001

Also, I regret not having seen AC/DC live when they were here in country, multiple times. Also, never had a chance to see Dire Straits.

Back when they had Stadium Concerts that went all day

We've done a few camping festivals, awesome stuff. Bands all day and night across multiple stages, back to the tent at night fot a feed and some drinks, up and at again in the morning.

Okay but keep away from the towers and the brown acid man.

1. The Roy Orbison "Black and White" concert from 1986.

2. Richard Wagner conducting his final performance of Parsifal in 1882.

3. The Beatles final concert tour performance at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966.

4. Led Zeppelin Madison Square Garden concert. I think that was 1976?

5. The inaugural performance of "The Ring" at Bayreuth in 1876.

According to "Amadeus" it was "The Magic Flute". I have no idea if that is historically accurate though.

I absolutely despise the atmosphere at rock concerts. I'm also very claustrophobic so the whole crush of people thing is a no go. Having said that I wish I had been able to see Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Off the top of my head:

RevCo and Ministry New Year's Eve 1989....to this day I regret I had to work that night.

Depeche Mode Music for the Masses Tour 1987

Any Cure concert prior to 1989 (and would gladly go to a Prayer Tour show again in 1989)

Any Joy Division show in the 70s

Johnny Cash in San Quentin Prison...simply because you probably couldn't ever see that show unless you were incarcerated there, haha.

I just had one top my list - Metallica at Oakridge Mall in San Jose, California, in 1996.

They just showed up practically unannounced with a stage in a huge semi-truck trailer and did a free show.

Here's where it gets crazy - my house was literally a 60 second walk from this parking lot at the time.

My JOB was 20 miles away in Palo Alto.

So I'm in my work truck going somewhere right by this place, right by my house, and there's this unannounced Metallica show going on, I could totally hear it and see the crowd...

And I had to get my butt back to Palo Alto...

I was so tempted to stop, but I pressed on with my job...

The Who any concert between 70-73 (they were on fire)

Humble Pie.. 72-73 (the hottest blues band in the early 70's)

Rolling Stones at Altamont.. (just to see the carnage)

Peter Frampton on his 75 tour..

Zep anything in 73-74 (they were on fire)

I was just a kid at the time but I saw several of the ones I'd want to see.

I had something of an advantage, school buddy of mine had an Aunt that worked for Ticket Max in Atlanta so she knew far in advance who was going to be where and when but more importantly she got free tickets.

Unfortunately for her and very fortunately for us she suffered from migraines so she couldn't go to the really loud concerts so we got free tickets to see just about everybody.

1.Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in Atlanta when they recorded the live version of Free Bird.

2.Saw Fleetwood Mac at the Omni in Atlanta and got to meet several of them kinda by accident, we got there early so they let us in because it was pouring down rain and it was all reserve seating anyway, the band was still doing sound checks Mick Fleetwood was out in the seating area, really nice guy as I recall, Buckingham was a nice guy as well but a little more standoffish and Stevie Nix is more attractive in person than in the photos of the time.

3.Saw Zeppelin in Birmingham Al. in 77'

Now for the wanted to see...

4.Kick myself now because I could have seen the Stones but didn't because I wasn't really into them at the time.

5.Wanted to see Pink Floyd but never got the chance, a guy I worked with went to the concert at the Omni in Atlanta but by then I couldn't afford the tickets.

Man, that sucks big time! I've managed to catch them 5 times now but would kill to see a non stadium type affair. Best gig i went to was their Poor Retouring me tour in the late '90's. No stage theatrics, just the band on a massive straight stage with a big black curtain backdrop. So good.

Friend of mine once paid extra to see Van Halen during what I think was the last Roth reunion, I can't remember...

So among a bunch of perks with that one was floor access with like 150 people during their rehearsals. My friend remarked at the clarity of the sound without a crowd.

I never doubted it. I got it for myself seeing Avengers Endgame in a theater with zero other people, it was insane.

So to even sit on a rock for a Pink Floyd show, with NO PEOPLE, that's insane...
