Online gaming buddies - 08/13/19 05:08 PM

Do you have any friends whom you have been doing online gaming with for a long time? If yes, do you remember the first game that was played and what type of connection was used?

I've been gaming with the same friend since 1991. First game was Falcon 3.0 via a null-modem connection. biggrin

Not sure if BBS counts as online but a friend (at the time) of mine played TradeWars 2000 in the mid 80's while we were in high school. 300 baud modems. No graphics. You mapped everything on graph paper to play that game back then.

I used to play with a group of guys (Jasta 30) in Red Baron II/3D to Rise of Flight but Rise of Flight fizzled and 777 just seemed to lose interest in supporting the game so I moved on and my kids really demanded more of my time so it was a perfect storm of reasons to quit interacting with friends online. Using Roger Wilco back in the day, then Team Speak guys were drinking and sometimes cussing and I didn't want my kids to hear that so I just chose to stop. I tried headphones but the sound quality to me is different. I do still play WWII Online but I am a lone wolf and don't use Discord just communicate by typing.

Overall I find it difficult to form relationships and never had a lot of friends, ever. I'm too used to doing things on my own. I've gotten a lot better the last few years for interacting with people but my natural tendencies are to go it alone.

Oh wow, that game is still around? I played it from day 1 of release back in 2001 until about 2003. I finally dumped the game when I realized that the playable map area was not going to change for a long time. Is the game still only set in Western Europe?

Yes, still Belgium and France. At some point in time during the turn over in owners they lost the knowledge to add towns but a volunteer dug deep and figured out how to add towns again. They have added towns in the Netherlands and are working towards Paris but aren't there yet. They've added more planes, tanks and weapons.

I got it on steam and bought the DLCs which was a one time expense. They have added a starter account for $5/mo and between them I have access to a good bit for not much $$ committed. They have since done away with the DLC packages but those that bought it got to keep it in game.

Circa year 2000 with the now defunct "Seawolves.org" community. It was runned by ex-mil officers, some still active at the time. It used a semi-mil doctrine so everything was quite in order, also rank scaling, very polite and respectful users overall. At the time it was the biggest community online with +1500 members.

Three divisions, air, land and sea. Air div. used Falcon 4 with the SuperPak mod, Sea div. used Janes 688i H/K and later Sub Command/Dangerous Waters, Land div. used Ghost Recon and Rainbox Six 3 (Raven Shield). Great times with people from all over the world, fleets, squadrons and companies were devided by your time-zone. Even had inter-community battles with other world communities. ThereĀ“s still some documents around written by some of the communitie leaders, like the "Blue Book", written by ADM Blue and VADM Hommer over at Subsim, a submarine tactical warfare guide. I was known as LCDR deep2112 for the wing, LT deep2112 for the fleet, and CPL deep2112 for the company.

We used 56k, and ICQ for chat/game set-ups, Roger Wilco or Ventrillo for voice.

Fond memories!

So the game has been in existence for 18 years and the main playable map has barely changed. I just find that both hilarious and absurd. smile

Lots of happy memories in Ghost Recon and Falcon 4.0 with guys from Frugalsworld. We had a regular gig going with Falcon missions, and some of us would also dabble in GPL Races. Great fun!

Starting playing EAW on the old MS gaming ZONE in 1998 or 1999. Formed No.105 Squadron in 2000. I am still in touch with three of the original members and finally met one in person last summer. I was in Ohio visiting cousins and discovered that he was about 1 1/2 hours away in Indiana , so I went to visit. Some of you may remember Coolhand, Ogdens and RichardG/Swoose

I have fond memories (even with all the latency) of playing Jedi Knight and Xwing vs.Tie Fighter on the MS Zone. That gaming service didn't last very long huh?

As far as online gaming with guys I didn't know in "real life", I was a member of the "Red Raiders" squadron in "Warbirds" 20 or so years ago.

Is "Warbirds" what was originally known as "Air Warrior" or was that a totally different online flight sim? My memory is a bit foggy on that.

It's a case of being more ambitious than being able to deliver. I wish they cut the scale down and included more countries. I've thought about Post Scriptum but the reviews on it in Steam have me on the fence. I have enough Steam games I don't use enough of, or at all.

Hope everything is good with him. Haven't seen him around here much. Still remember doing NOLF2 with you guys. That was a truly underrated game.

He's doing very well! Thanks for asking. smile

Yeah, it's crazy to think that NOLF 2 came out 17 years ago.

On the flip side, I have been playing on XBOX for last several years, and other than some SIMHQ members, I don't have any friendships formed through that platform. XBOX Gamers seem to be very shallow. ha!

I was thinking more along the lines that you'll mostly find players who are like 35-40 years younger than you on that platform. wink

My last online gaming buddy almost ended up becoming my wife - and she lived literally on the other side of the planet when I first "met" her!
