Capt Marvel - 03/11/19 01:37 PM

Anyone else see this? Really fun flick, much of it predictable, but there is a big difference I wasn’t expecting. A good setup to Avengers, which is apparently right behind it, coming out next month. A nice little tribute to Stan during the intro, in place of the red comic book cell art thing they do bringing up the Marvel logo. Nice to see Samuel Jackson back.
Shazam...not very enthusiastic about it. DC needs to go dark again, IMO. Get the Flash movie out!

I'll see it when it's available to watch from home. I still enjoy super hero/comic book movies but really not enough to bother going out to the movie theater.

Shazam looks like a hoot, it is might go to the theater for.

We saw it on release night, it was probably my favourite Avemgers tie in so far. I was surprised! Fun movie. Another one of the rare times with a packed cinema and everyone clapped at the end. Myy kids, daym they are all adults now lol, are still nuts for everything Avengers. They are absolutely pumped for Endgame.

Wonder Woman is still the hottest although Captain Marvel was pretty slick in that suit.

all feminism hate aside, i though it was very weak, i was expecting it to be a least above antman and the wasp, for me it was below, too many tell and dont show made the story lacking in character development and motivations, its clear a lot got dumped in the editor ground and the flashback was more of a necessity to streamline the origin since endgame is right on the corner than a new way of show the origin like they claimed or should i say, market it. i Saw alone because i was not waiting the miss to return later in the month.....so for you guys who took GF, spouses, what was their response to the movie ? I see women even those not agressively feminist are much more hooked into it, even when they dont know anything about the character.
Also the movie is already on its way for the billion club, i wonder if marvel can sue ike perlmutter for damage losses since it was him who prevented black panther and captain marvel years ago.

Saw it yesterday. I'd rate it as 'good, not great'. Fairly formulaic with a couple plot twists (more like 'oh, yeah' moments, because after the reveal you remember that it's forgotten old news), a lot of fun mid-90's references, and one really good surprise. All in all it felt a little forced, kind of like Star Wars I, II, and III, because just like those movies this is shoehorning Captain Marvel's existence and absence until now to set up her presence in Endgame. And honestly, parts of it were very reminiscent of some of the hokier parts of Green Lantern, IMO. The eventual actual setup is very nicely done and worth the wait.

Ultimately, my yardstick is did I regret the money I spent on the ticket. I only paid eight bucks US to see it in 3D, and the answer is an emphatic NO, I'm not sorry. If the theater's IMAX had been showing it in 3D I would have been happy to have paid the $12 or 13$ to see it there, but they aren't.

This is my yardstick as well.

I've been finding out recently though that less and less movies are generating enough interest on my part to make the effort to go to the movie theater.

Re: Capt Marvel - 03/12/19 04:49 PM

I saw it Sunday, and really enjoyed it. I felt it was one of the better ones with just the right amount of humour, and action, and a story line big enough to qualify her as a useful asset against Thanos. I'm looking forward to :Endgame. The preview for Shazam looked amusing, and if regretting the cost of admission is the measure of success or not, I'll probably be seeing it. After all, I actually enjoyed the AntMan movies, while conceding they were much more fluff flicks (albeit funny enough for me to enjoy) than many of the other offerings. Shazam seems similar.

Cheers,

Saw it Sunday, it was pretty mediocre at best. Plus it didn't really line up with their already established timeline or how they have been portraying a few of the staple characters for the franchise. Watched it once, no desire to ever watch it again.

Went to see Alita Battle Angel instead based on a friend's recommendation. Now that was a good film. definitely worth seeing in the theater. I'll probably catch captain marvel in a week or two.

Re: Capt Marvel - 03/18/19 01:06 PM

So I wouldn't mind seeing "Shazam!" because I used to read those comics as a kid, but the thing that bothers me is how they turn it into this goofy comedy thing. Also for those who don't know, that superhero's name is actually CAPTAIN MARVEL not SHAZAM. "Shazam!" is what Billy Batson says to transform into Captain Marvel. I just don't think that they wanted to use the Captain Marvel name because they'd be competing with the Brie Larson Captain Marvel, and probably some legal stuff too, who knows? But I'm a bit put off by making the DC Captain Marvel movie a goofy one because in the comics, he is a legitimate and serious superhero.

BTW, Shazam is actually an acronym made up of the name of "immortal elders" (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, Mercury) from which he draws his powers:

Wisdom of Solomon: enhanced intellect, knowledge and focus of the gods
Strength of Hercules: superhuman strength
Stamina of Atlas: superhuman stamina and invulnerability
Power of Zeus: control over unlimited magic lightning, immortality, energy manipulation and spell-casting
Courage of Achilles: indomitable will
Speed of Mercury: superhuman speed

Now, as for the other Captain Marvel, I thought it was decent. I don't know if I was so gaga about it but I think I would watch it again. It was interesting to see how things unfolded and I liked the Skrull aspect and was looking forward to their portrayal in the movie based on the comics. I liked the "Top Gun" reference too, haha. I also liked the "Oh, so that is why this is" and "Oh, so THAT is how he got that way" reveals.

I was also enjoying Brie Larson wearing a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt. Apparently Trent Reznor and Marvel struck a deal with that. If you go to the nin.com page, they actually have licensed Capt Marvel NIN tshirts for sale. Gotta love commercialism.

Should be interesting to ramp up to Endgame.

DC and Marvel ripped each other off so much, it's amazing that didn't happen more often. I didn't know Shazam was originally another publisher's property, I thought DC created him. It's all too convoluted. Proper comic book style. LOL
